Résumé
About the Artist:Monica Dolores Baza Katerina Teaiwa Monica Dolores Baza is of CHamoru and French-Canadian heritage and has a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Concordia University in Montreal. Her designs, drawings, paintings, and linoleum block prints are inspired by CHamoru material, visual, symbolic, and storytelling culture and the island environment of Guåhan (Guam). Baza was influenced by role models such as Filamore Palomo Alcon and Adriano Baza Pangelinan and credits her growth as an artist to participating in gatherings filled with robust discussions and constructive criticism of art practice and theory. She was one of nine founding members of the Chamorro Artists Association in 1987 and established Baza Designs that same year. In 1994 she collaborated with four others to found the Guam Gallery of Art. In 1995 Baza and her sister incorporated the expanding design business specializing in art cards, bags, t-shirts, and fine art. In his 2022 review of the book for the journal Native American and Indigenous Studies (9[2]: 129–230), Chadwick Allen praised Baza's cover as truly embodying the spirit of the stories, poetry, ideas, and arguments within the book's pages: "In Baza's rendering, the palm's sinuous trunk—black with yellow striations depicting older growth and hints of green depicting newer growth—rises from a band of … black earth into a blue sky alive with swirling wind that is simultaneously a blue sea alive with teeming fish" (129). All of Baza's works featured in this double issue are from 2016 and emit similar, abundant energies. They evoke deep layers of Island history, culture, land, sea, and sky through vibrant colors that we hope you can sense, even in the black-and-white version of this journal. Since the 2016 collection, Monica has taken time away from her arts profession to focus on caring for family. "Taotao" means "people" in the CHamoru language, while "latte" refers to limestone or basalt pillars and cup-shaped capitals or capstones that represent house supports from the time of the ancient people of the Mariana Islands who buried their dead between the stones. It is a contemporary symbol of CHamoru strength and identity. [End Page viii] Click for larger view View full resolution Full Moon Åmot Healing, by Monica D Baza, 2016.
