Feldmeier and Spieckerman provide a comprehensive treatment of the doctrine of the incarnation in the Bible.The book's two main sections are Prehistory in the OT and Incarnation in the NT.In the OT, God uses human representatives-messengers, mediators, and others with special closeness to God-to proclaim his will, acts, and willingness to forgive sinners and draw them back to himself.These "bearers of hope" display royal, priestly, and prophetic characteristics and proclaim new and unexpected closeness of God.God also used mediatory figures to uphold God's righteousness, demand it of his people, and remind them of his compassionate (hesed) love for them.Throughout their treatment of mediation in the OT, the authors present texts that prefigure the ultimate mediator-God's Son (i.e., the Anointed One, God's Child, the One Endowed with the Spirit, the Son of Man, the Shepherd, Son of David, and the Servant), and intertextual echoes/references that connect to this ultimate mediator.They also discuss mediators in Second Temple Jewish literature.In the second section of their book, the authors analyze God's incarnation of Jesus Christ as the central theological theme of the NT.Some of the main theological topics discussed are: Son of God, Son of Man, Soteriology, Christological Monotheism, Christ Jesus as Lord, the Word, the Light of the World, and the Lamb.In Jesus, the rule of God is in its closest proximity to human beings, and God's will is made known.Jesus demands that humans respond to this closeness through their conduct since Jesus mirrors the conduct of God the Father.The authors highlight Jesus' mediatorial role in his public ministry, suffering/death, and resurrection/exaltation. Feldmeier and Spieckermann provide the reader with an excellent, comprehensive treatment of the incarnation.More details on how the incarnation relates to the parousia would have been helpful, as the Son of Man's parousia brings culmination to Jesus' incarnational role.This book is appropriate for graduate and scholarly audiences and would be an excellent resource for courses in OT Theology, NT Theology, and Christology.
