Andreini, Isabella. Lovers’ Debates for the Stage: A Bilingual Edition. Ed. and trans. Pamela Allen Brown, Julie D. Campbell, and Eric Nicholson
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
This modern bilingual edition brings Isabella Andreini's unique collection of the Lovers' Debates to Italian and English theatre scholars for the first time in a very attractive volume prepared by three editors, established commedia scholars, who jointly offer a comprehensive critical introduction, followed by translations of the thirty-one Amorosi contrasti shared between the three and prepared individually with detailed background notes. The translations strike a conscious balance between Andreini's decorated Baroque style and a modern colloquial English suitable for play texts. In their deliberate choice to favour the Baroque, they capture the frequent use of self-parody revealing the metatheatrical skills of the speakers as they make fun of their own pretensions.Feminist and theatre scholars are privileged to finally have access to these stage works which tell so much about Isabella's artistic genius, erudition, eloquence, and feminist philosophy.Compiled by her famous husband, Francesco, and first published in 1617, many years after her death in 1604, they bring her back to life as Francesco tells us in his letter to the readers. These Lovers' Debates capture the lifelong collaboration of Isabella and Francesco as the star couple of the Gelosi, revealing their prowess in composing duologues on the endless vagaries on the theme of love.Whether or not they were actual stage partners is less important than our receiving these texts as ready for joint improvisation. The Lovers' Debates raised the profile of the innamorati, establishing their central importance to the making of plays. It also tipped the scales towards showing the female speakers as superior, and, more specifically, of Isabella's ascendancy over Francesco. The introduction locates the love dialogue as a dominant genre of the time describing the sources it draws on, including Boccaccio, Bembo, and others, and showing how the contrasti follow actual models but adapted them for the stage. It links them to the courtly exchanges that aristocrats typically engaged in when they played popular love games at parties. As Francesco said,
