The Palais du Gouvernement in Pondicherry (today Puducherry) was begun in 1738, completed in 1752, and destroyed by the British in 1761, while the Palais du Gouvernement Général in Saigon (today Ho Chi Minh City) was built ca. 1875–79, became a presidential palace after Vietnamese independence in 1954, and was demolished in 1962 after being damaged by a bombing. Through the stories of these two buildings, the reader is introduced to the vast scope of the book. In exploring the history of architecture built in the French Empire in Asia, Bailey addresses two imperial eras, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and then the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as two regions divided by thousands of kilometers, the Indian subcontinent and...
