Prefaceto describe the trend of unmanipulated systems towards stable equilibrium states.With this, the complete set of thermodynamic laws is available almost immediately, and the evaluation of all thermodynamic processes and engines relies on both laws from the start.Those considerations on engines that are typically employed to derive the second law now result from the analysis by means of the first and second law.The discussion of property relations, processes in closed and open systems, thermodynamic cycles, inert and reacting mixtures is presented thoroughly, with interesting examples that often focus on irreversibility and work loss.Topics that might not be found in other books on engineering thermodynamics concern the microscopic definition of entropy, and advanced energy conversion systems such as pressure exchangers, Atkinson engine, solar updraft power plant, turbo-fan aircraft engine, ramjet and scramjet, compressed air energy storage, desalination and osmotic power plants, carbon sequestration, and fuel cells.The principles of nonequilibrium thermodynamics are used to derive Newton's law of cooling, Darcy's law for flow through porous media, thermo-diffusion effects, and the Butler-Volmer equation for activation losses in fuel cells.Thermodynamics is a technical subject that can only be fully understood through application of its laws and relations to a wide range of meaningful problems.Throughout the text development of theory is accompanied by detailed solutions of example problems, which teach the required technical skills while giving insight into the multitude of thermodynamic processes and applications.About 550 end-of-chapter problems-for self-study, homework assignments, and exams-emphasize all important concepts and processes.All chapters of this book went through many runs of the respective course, with regular additions and deletions, changes and adjustments, more examples and new problems.For this 2nd edition the material was thoroughly revised, expanded, and corrected, including new or improved sections and figures, and more problems.The newly added appendix provides a list of symbols and their units, and almost 40 pages of thermodynamic property data for common gases and liquids which provide the data required for all examples and problems.My heartfelt thanks to: The many students that went through my courses, for their feedback, corrections, and, sometimes, critical praise.Jason Olfert (University of Alberta, Canada) for providing useful comments and corrections for several chapters.My friends-in thermodynamics and life
