Résumé
This elegantly edited volume contains chapters written by eminent scholars of migration, ethnicity, Polish diaspora, American history, Polish history, and world history. The scope is diverse to match the broad and diverse interests of the scholar to whom it is dedicated. Adam Walaszek, who received this tribute from colleagues, and friends, esteemed experts in relevant fields, remains the top historian of migration, ethnicity, and diaspora studies in Poland. Therefore, the high quality and care with which this volume was prepared and edited by his colleagues from the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków is hardly a surprise. Dedicating an edited publication to a senior scholar at the time of their jubilee is a well-established tradition in Poland. The introduction presenting Professor Walszek is as modest, witty and intriguing as he is. The content of the volume is solid, engrossing, and scholarly to match the quality of Walaszek's works. The book is divided into two sections: “History and Politics” (five chapters), and “Migrations, Polonia and Poles in the World.” The latter is significantly longer, consisting of sixteen chapters. The first section opens with an essay by Marcin Kula on upward social mobility. The author uses migration studies as a model to argue for a more extensive dialogue between scholars representing history and sociology in other fields. The second chapter by Krzysztof Zamorski discusses Polish historiographical approaches to the socioeconomic history of Poland. The three articles that follow offer a selection of cases from the political history of the United States. Andrzej Mania reflects on migration policies during the administration of G. H. W. Bush. Marcin Fatalski examines US policies toward Iran during the Shah rule. Paweł Laider describes the presidential elections in the United States in 2020 examining the impact of COVID-19.The interdisciplinary and diversified nature of the volume is even more evident in the second section of the volume. It could be arranged into four thematic areas: Polish diaspora globally, Polish Americans (including in Canada), migration case studies, and investigations into issues of ethnicity and identity.Readers of Polish American Studies will certainly appreciate texts contributing to the history of Polonia communities in North America. Anna Jaroszyńska-Kirchmann writes on Willimantic, Connecticut; Dorota Praszałowicz on Seattle, Washington; and Janusz Pezda on Piotr Kowalewski's organizational activities in New York in the first half of the nineteenth century. The organizational activities of American Polonia in the twentieth century are discussed by Joanna Wojdon (Legion of Young Polish Women) and Magdalena Paluszkiewicz-Misiaczek (Polish Combatants’ Association in Canada). This coherent slate of articles is capped by Anna Reczyńska's chapter on Polish sailors reaching Vancouver in the 1980s.The second section of the volume offers a much-needed perspective on the Polish diaspora in other regions of the world. Jolanta Szymkowska-Bartyzel discusses Mickiewicz in France, Krzysztof Smolana writes on Polish missionaries in China based on archival documentation from Brazil. The remainder of the articles in the second section of the volume offer kaleidoscopic snippets from a variety of regions—from Australia (Jan Lencznarowicz) to Yukon, Nunavut, and territories in between (Marcin Gabryś). There are articles on the Chinese in Vancouver (Marta Kijewska-Trembecka) and Japanese immigration to Peru (Marta Kania). Intersections between ethnicity, culture, and identity are examined via cases coming from Canada (Tomasz Soroka), the United States (Agnieszka Stasiewicz-Bieńkowska), as well as from Venice (Agnieszka Małek), and Polish-Ukrainian borderlands (Ewa Michna). As is often the case with the jubilee collections, a reader may search in vain for traces of editorial control of the scholars offering their research as a tribute to the person awarded such honorary recognition by fellow academics. Hence, a single, uniform thread in the volume is not easy to find. It seems as if the glue in this collection is neatly captured in the volume's title: “Between the Old and the New World: History, migrations, ethnicity,” which in turn precisely matches Adam Walaszek's interests. The study of the Polish American past requires context, reference points, and perspectives, as well as a viable dialogue among representatives of many disciplines: history, sociology, cultural studies, political science, and more. While all of the above help define our field, the volume dedicated to Adam Walaszek is a great way to advance it.
