Experimental Study of a Thermal Ground Plane in a Battery Thermal Management System for Electric Aircraft Applications
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The use of Thermal Ground Plane (TGP) based Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) is showing promise and interest from both academia and the electric vehicle industry for its thermal properties. These passive heat exchangers are a variant of heat pipes that rely on an internal liquid-vapor phase change to achieve a thermal conductivity higher than that of the materials from which they are made. Because they are fluid dependent, they do not have constant thermal properties like metals and an understanding of this variation is required before using them as a BTMS. This paper investigates the experimental effects of orientation, heat flux and operating temperatures on the thermal performance of the TGP. A thermal test bench is used to provide the temperature distribution on the TGP with respect to the above test parameters, and thus the effective thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of the TGP in these configurations. It is shown that the effective thermal conductivity of the TGP prototype varied by up to 50 % over the power profile used. Variation in orientation also resulted in 0.5 to 1.8 times the baseline thermal conductivity. This study uses a new way of representing TGP behavior and shows that thermal conductivity is closely related to internal operating temperature. This study demonstrates that vehicle integration and temperature operating range are critical factors in the consideration and development of a TGP-based BTMS, particularly for aerospace applications.
