Advances in Ocular Surface Research, with a star team of editors Jennifer Craig, Eric Papas, Fiona Stapleton, James Wolffsohn, Laura Downie, Lyndon Jones, and Nicole Carnt, is the second feature issue in Optometry & Vision Science in 2024. The team, all members of the editorial board of Optometry & Vision Science, have done a superb job, and the issue provides a tremendous series of papers on this topic that will be of great value to clinicians, researchers, and industry. We thank all authors for submitting to the issue and hope feedback for those that missed out has been helpful in rewriting reports or redesigning studies. We also thank reviewers, who provide an invaluable role in improving manuscripts and keeping the quality of published papers high. It is remarkable given that they (and the editors) do this work without any remuneration, are asked to perform it within a short time period, and do it on top of their normal day job! Craig, PhD, FCOptom—Feature Issue Lead EditorTherapeutic research optometrist Jennifer Craig is a professor in ophthalmology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, where she heads the Ocular Surface Laboratory. Since being awarded her PhD on the tear film in the normal and dry eye, Jennifer has maintained her research interest in the ocular surface, primarily dry eye disease and tear film dysfunction. She regularly delivers continuing education and research lectures internationally and publishes widely in both the scientific and clinical press with more than 180 published peer-reviewed articles. She coauthored the book The Tear Film and has contributed to the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society's (TFOS's) International Workshops on Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and Contact Lens Discomfort, as vice chair for TFOS DEWS II and as chair of the TFOS Lifestyle Workshop: A Lifestyle Epidemic—Ocular Surface Disease, as well as the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) CLEAR reports. Jennifer is a past Chair of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board of New Zealand, leads international multicenter clinical trials, and holds a number of visiting academic appointments across the world.Nicole Carnt, BOptom, PhD, FAAONicole Carnt is Scientia Associate Professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW, Sydney, Australia. She graduated from Optometry at UNSW in 1989 and worked in private practice for 10 years in Australia and the United Kingdom before taking a position with the Brien Holden Vision Institute, UNSW, in 1999. She completed a PhD on Genetics and Epidemiology of Contact Lens Related Infection and Inflammation 2008–2012 and has been the recipient of many research awards including two American Academy of Optometry Ezell Fellowships. She was awarded a prestigious Australian Government NHMRC Research Fellowship in 2012 and spent the first 2.5 years at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. Currently, she leads a multidisciplined team investigating genomic, environmental, and behavioral risk factors for keratitis. She is chair of the Australian Standards Committee on Contact Lenses and an ISO Contact lens working Group Panelist. Nicole also holds honorary research positions at University College London (UCL) and Westmead Institute for Medical Research, University of Sydney, and teaches ocular disease in the UNSW Clinical Optometry Masters course. Nicole is passionate about patient engagement in research, healthy contact lens wear, women in STEMM, and mentoring in research and optometry.Laura E. Downie, PhD, BOptom, FAAOLaura Downie is a clinician scientist who is a professor and Dame Kate Campbell Fellow for Research Excellence in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne. She heads the Anterior Eye, Clinical Trials and Research Translation Unit, and is inaugural Director of the Melbourne Cochrane Centre for Evidence-Based Vision Care, one of nine such centers globally recognized for leading the translation of research into practice. Laura's research combines laboratory, clinical, and implementation science as a foundation for improving patient outcomes, particularly in the area of anterior eye disease. She has undertaken postgraduate training in evidence synthesis and evidence-based medicine at the University of Oxford and completed the Women's Executive Leadership program at the Hass School of Business, UC Berkeley. She has achieved international recognition for her research, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Secretariat Award (2021) and the Irvin M and Beatrice Borish Award from the American Academy of Optometry (2014). She has served as a chair on national and international expert panels, including the TFOS International Workshops and BCLA CLEAR Initiative. In addition to contributing as an editorial board member for Optometry and Vision Science, she acts in this capacity for several journals, including Ophthalmology and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.Lyndon Jones, FCOptom, PhD, FAAOLyndon Jones is a professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science and a university professor and Director of the Centre for Ocular Research and Education at the University of Waterloo. He graduated in optometry from the University of Wales and gained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Biomaterials Research Unit at Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom. He was awarded an honorary DSc by Aston University in July 2018 for his research work on contact lenses. He holds three of the higher clinical awards granted by the UK College of Optometrists and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, in which he is also a Diplomate in Cornea and Contact Lenses. He is also a fellow of IACLE, the BCLA, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and the Royal Society of Canada. His research interests primarily focus on the interaction of novel and existing contact lens materials with the ocular environment, dry eye, and the development of novel materials for ocular drug delivery. His research work has attracted grant and contract funding of more than $100 million. He has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed and professional articles and one textbook and given more than 1200 invited lectures at conferences worldwide, in more than 40 countries. He has been awarded more than 40 national and international awards, including the 2019 BCLA Medal, 2019 AOCLE Lester Janoff Cornea and Contact Lens Memorial Award, 2018 IACLE Contact Lens Educator of the Year for the Americas, the 2014 Glenn Fry Award from the American Academy of Optometry, the 2014 Donald Korb Award from the American Optometric Association, and the 2013 Max Schapero Award from the Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the American Academy of Optometry.Eric B. Papas, PhD, BSc(Optom), BScEric Papas is emeritus professor in the School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of New South Wales. He holds degrees in physics and optometry and has spent much of his career in research related to the ocular surface and contact lenses, including periods working in clinical practice, industry, and academia. He was formerly Executive Director of R&D at the Brien Holden Vision Institute and is a coinventor of silicone hydrogels. Internationally known as an educator and lecturer at scientific and professional conferences, he has been awarded the Charles F. Prentice Medal by the American Academy of Optometry, the Max Schapero Award from the AAO Section on Cornea, Contact Lenses and Refractive Technologies, the British Contact Lens Association Medal, and the H. Barry Collin Research Medal by Optometry Australia.Fiona Stapleton, FCOptom, PhD, FAAOFiona Stapleton is a clinical scientist with expertise in basic and translational research in the fields of contact lens–related disease, corneal infection, and dry eye. Her research aims to improve understanding of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of sight-threatening ocular diseases. She has published more than 300 articles and has received several international awards for her research. She is the immediate Past President of the International Society for Contact Lens Research. She was nominated to the Australian Academy of Science, Technology and Engineering in 2018 and to Life Fellowship of the British College of Optometrists in 2019 and is a Diplomate in the Cornea, Contact Lens and Refractive Technologies Section of the AAO. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2023.James S. Wolffsohn, BSc, MBA, PhD, FAAOJames Wolffsohn, a professor of optometry at Aston University since 2000, is the head of the School of Optometry. His main research areas are the development and evaluation of ophthalmic instrumentation, contact lenses, intraocular lenses, and the tear film. He is National Teaching Fellow, has published more than 335 full peer-reviewed articles, and presented at numerous international conferences. He is Academic Chair of the BCLA, is on the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Executive, and is the International Myopia Institute's Chief Scientific Officer.
