ABSTRACT The Imaginary of Globalisation in a Few Contemporary French Novels Since the 1990s, globalisation seems to have become the supra-paradigm of our contemporary world. Multiform and multiscalar, globalisation impacts all areas of our society, which has itself become globalised. Faced with the sense of its omnipresence, literature as a discourse and a discipline also finds itself grappling with the irresistible tension of this phenomenon that is restructuring our socialities. This dissertation is interested in studying globalisation in its fictional expressions, to see how it contaminates contemporary literary practices in general and the production of novels in particular. In other words, the aim is to study the novelistic expressions of globalisation through a corpus of contemporary French and francophone novels. Our thesis is structured around three main inflections. Firstly, from an ideological perspective, our analysis focuses on the multi-situated representation of the phenomenon, in order to show, contrary to common wisdom, that globalisation is not a uniform reality and that the way it is experienced depends on a range of contextual data. The second axis of our work is essentially aesthetic and poetic. Here, the aim is to study globalisation as an object of representation, by examining narrative structures, forms of writing, authorial postures and other intradiegetic clues likely to reveal the influences of the dynamics of globalisation on the creation of novels. Finally, our thesis questions the political and ethical forces behind globalisation. So it is precisely a question of contrasting the colonising tension of globalisation with the anti-systemic powers of the novel, which, far from being a passive recorder of the world, is in a different and more effective sense a space for creation, a fertile territory for imagining alternative worlds. Through its creative freedom and its powers of counter-scenarisation, fiction reinvents globalisation and gives it alternative and desirable forms.
