We are delighted to celebrate the 20th edition of the International Symposium on Occupational Safety andHygiene – SHO’2024. This year's event, held in ahybrid format, reflects our commitment toadaptability and inclusivity, ensuring that participantscan engage with the symposium regardless of globalchallenges. The dedication of the Portuguese Societyfor Occupational Safety and Hygiene (SPOSHO) andthe unwavering support of our community have madethis possible. This milestone marks two decades of our collectiveefforts to advance the field of occupational safety andhygiene, fostering collaboration, innovation, andexcellence. Since its inception, SHO has evolved intoa premier platform for experts, practitioners, andenthusiasts worldwide to exchange knowledge, shareexperiences, and discuss the latest developments inour field. As we commemorate this significant milestone, wealso pay tribute to the visionary leadership of ProfessorA. Sérgio Miguel, the founder of SPOSHO and thedriving force behind the creation of this symposium.His dedication and foresight have laid the foundationfor SHO's success and its role in shaping the discourseon occupational safety and hygiene. Sadly, ProfessorA. Sérgio Miguel passed away earlier this year, leavingbehind a lasting legacy of innovation and commitmentto advancing workplace safety. We honour his memoryand extend our deepest gratitude for his invaluablecontributions to our community. The proceedings of the 20th edition of SHO encompassa diverse array of topics reflecting contemporarychallenges and advancements in occupational safetyand hygiene. Key themes include the assessment andmitigation of occupational risks, strategies forenhancing workplace health and safety, and innovativeapproaches to hazard identification and control.Contributions also explore the intersection ofoccupational health with broader public healthconcerns, emphasising health promotion and diseaseprevention among workers. Case studies, empiricalresearch, and theoretical discussions provide acomprehensive overview of current practices andfuture directions. This year, we received an impressive 141 submissions,with 135 accepted, reflecting an acceptance rate of96%. The rigorous peer review process, involving 290reviews by our International Scientific Committee(ISC) consisting of 98 professionals from 13 countries,ensures that accepted contributions uphold the higheststandards of scholarly inquiry and practical relevance.The participation of 376 authors from 19 countriesunderscores the symposium's global impact, bringingtogether diverse perspectives and cutting-edgeresearch. As customary, the papers will be published bySPOSHO in the Symposium Proceedings book.Additionally, selected papers have been included asbook chapters by Springer Nature for the fifthconsecutive year and indexed in SCOPUS.Outstanding papers have the opportunity to be featuredin the International Journal of Occupational andEnvironmental Safety (IJOOES), enhancing thevisibility of research presented at SHO. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants,organisers, and supporters who have made SHO acornerstone of knowledge exchange and advancementin our field. The extensive participation andcontributions from authors highlight our community'svibrant and collaborative nature. We also acknowledgethe invaluable support from academic institutions,professional organisations, and companies, includingthe Brazilian Ergonomics Association (ABERGO),Portuguese Authorities for Working Conditions (ACT),the Association of Specialists in Prevention andOccupational Health (AEPSAL), the PortugueseErgonomics Association (APERGO), the PortugueseAssociation for Safety (APSEI), the CommercialAssociation of Safety Engineers de Ljubljana (DVILjubljana), the European Network of ProfessionalSafety and Health Organizations (ENSHPO), theHungarian Occupational Safety and Health Academy(HOSHA), the Research Network on WorkingConditions (RICOT), Galician Society for thePrevention of Occupational Risks (SGPRL), thePortuguese Society of Labour Medicine (SPMT), thePortuguese Acoustics Society (SPA).Furthermore, we appreciate the support from variousmedia partners, including Proteger and the Segurançamagazine, for their contributions towards the extensivedissemination of this significant event. As we look back on the journey of SHO, we areproud of the impact we have made and the progressachieved. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to allspeakers, participants, sponsors, and organisers whohave contributed to the success of this symposiumover the years. Here's to celebrating 20 years of SHO and to manymore years of promoting safety, health, and well-beingin workplaces worldwide.
