Résumé
Current Opinion in Hematology was launched in 1994. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of hematology is divided into nine sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Editor in chief for this issue. EDITOR IN CHIEF Maha OthmanMaha OthmanDr. Othman is a clinical pathologist/hematologist with specialized training in haemostasis laboratory testing and molecular genetics of bleeding disorders and over 20 years’ experience in research and academia. She obtained MSc and PhD degrees from Mansoura University, Egypt and Southampton University, UK. She holds positions at the School of Medicine, Queen's University, the School of Baccalaureate Nursing at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario, Canada and the faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt. Her research interests include the clinical and molecular aspects of von Willebrand disease and platelet disorders, particularly platelet type (PT)-VWD, and thromboelastography assessment of coagulopathies in women, pregnancy and cancer. She is a world leader in the diagnosis and management of PT-VWD. She has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, her research is recognized internationally, and she is invited regularly to speak at international conferences. She is a senior editor for Seminars in Thrombosis and Haemostasis and on the editorial board of Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis. She is a member of several scientific organizing committees on women's health, and advisory boards for international haemostasis conferences. She is the previous Chairman of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) on Women's Health Issues in Thrombosis and Haemostasis of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) and a current co-chair at the ISTH SSC on DIC. She is a passionate Educator and Mentor and an advocate for rare bleeding disorders and bleeding and clotting disorders in women. She holds the Executive Women in Leadership certificate from Cornell University, US. She is the 2021 recipient of the Academic Excellence Award for her teaching and the “Jessenius Distinguished Lecture Award” (School of Medicine, Martin, Slovakia). She is also the 2022 recipient of the Ontario's Minister of Colleges and Universities’ Award of Excellence for Everyday Hero. This award was for stepping up and making a difference at three levels during the COVID-19 pandemic: Research and Innovation, Teaching and Learning, and Professional Development of Early Career Researchers Dr Dianne E. van der WalDr Dianne E. van der WalDr Dianne E. van der Wal is a senior platelet biologist, currently working at the ANZAC Research Institute, Sydney, Australia. She has been a senior research fellow at the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood R&D for over 8 years, where she studied all factors influencing the quality of platelet components for transfusion. Her expertise includes surface glycans on platelets, lipids and extracellular vesicles, cell death mechanisms, and general platelet function. She was the first social media for the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. She is a principal editor for Platelets and Co-chair of the Platelet Physiology SSC of the ISTH. She previously showed that desialylation is important for platelet clearance in bleeding disorder ITP, potentially leading to novel diagnosis or treatment approaches. During her PhD at the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands, she demonstrated novel platelet apoptosis pathways following cold-storage.
