Translating Faith: Ethiopian Pilgrims in Renaissance Rome is a meticulously researched and fascinating monograph.In terms of its research, analysis, and scope, it offers a model for how to treat a distinctive religious community with diasporic ties.Over the course of nine chapters, Samantha Kelly illuminates a wealth of intellectual, political, and religious connections between the pilgrims and other Christian communities/institutions, local scholars, and ecclesiastical authorities in Rome; Ethiopian monasteries in Ethiopia and Palestine; and European and Ethiopian rulers.We also gain tantalizing glimpses into a unique devotional community that in form, function, and values manifested the Ethiopian tradition at the political and religious epicentre of the Catholic Church (Rome).As Ethiopian Christians, the pilgrims were proud carriers of an ancient Christian tradition that rivaled the Catholic tradition in its claims to authenticity and legitimacy.These men came to Rome as pilgrims eager to experience Rome's sacrality, but they were also students, scholars, priests, and diplomatic intermediaries useful to the papacy and Ethiopian rulers.Italian scholars and Church authorities recognized the richness of Ethiopian liturgical, literary, and exegetical traditions, even as they worked to bring the Ethiopian Church into closer alignment doctrinally, liturgically, and administratively with the Catholic Church.From the standpoint of the papacy, moreover, the pilgrims were local representatives of a Christian kingdom that was a valued ally, one useful both in the papacy's struggle against Islam and for expanding the Church's authority within a Christendom broadly defined.We learn in the book's introduction that the evidentiary base for a study of the Ethiopian community is quite substantial once Italian and Ethiopian sources are brought into dialogue with one another.Kelly draws upon scholarly and other manuscripts produced by the pilgrims as well as European correspondence and administrative documents.In chapter 1, Kelly locates the community in its home at the church of Santo Stefano in Rome.She finds evidence of a small community there from around 1500, though the precise starting date is unknown.Chapter 2 then explores the church's institutional character
