Among Paolo Veronese's celebrated frescoes in the Villa Barbaro at Maser (c.1560-62), the Hall of Olympus has proven an especially knotty iconographical puzzle.In the vault, a resplendent female figure astride a dragon hovers in a cloud above the seven planetary deities.While the cosmological import is clear, art historians have proposed nearly a dozen different identifications for the "woman in white." Denis Ribouillault proposes a new interpretation in this deeply researched and beautifully produced monograph.She is Latona (Leto in Greek), mother of Apollo and Diana (Artemis), and represents the point of convergence for what he sees as the cycle's central themes of astrology, philosophy, and the family.Maser has become "Delos in Terraferma, " a reference to the island where Latona gave birth to her celestial twins.The book employs an iconological method that Ribouillault describes as "contextual" and "intermedial" (33) to look afresh at Villa Barbaro's frescoes and the sculptures of its garden, façade, and nymphaeum.Rejecting the notion of an "open work, " he asserts that the decoration has a "programmatic unity" that discloses a primary, "intended meaning" (29).This meaning "revolves around two great principles, feminine and masculine, foundations of the family and the cosmos" (217).The villa, Ribouillault argues, makes a remarkable and unusual tribute to women and the family, one that relates the microcosm of the home to the harmony of the cosmos and female and male virtue to the well-being of state and society.He builds on the earlier contributions of Mary Rogers and Luciana Crosato Larcher regarding the female imagery but offers a more comprehensive reading.Ribouillault accepts the attribution of the iconographic program to the elder Barbaro brother, Daniele, a renowned scholar and cleric.Daniele's engagement with philosophical, religious, and scientific questions provides much fodder for the argument.Yet the author rightly points out that the villa was not only "the sanctuary of a great and pious scholar" but also the "estate of a powerful and prestigious family, and a house full of children and pets"
