Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 12 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Editors in Chief and Section Editors for this issue. EDITORS IN CHIEF Luc A. CynoberLuc A. CynoberLuc A. Cynober, PhD, Pharm.D obtained his Pharm.D degree in 1979 from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Paris XI, France. In 1985, he received his PhD in Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences from the same university. He was head of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Hôtel-Dieu and Cochin Hospitals, Paris, France, (1997–2021), and Professor of Nutrition at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Clermont-Ferrand University and then University Paris Descartes, France. Dr Cynober is a member of the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN), American Nutrition Society and French Speaking Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. He served from 1992–2000 as officer in the executive committee of ESPEN, and from 2001–2005 as chairman of the French-Speaking Society of Nutrition and Metabolism. In the years 1987–1992 he served as Editor-in-Chief of Nutrition Clinique & Métabolisme. He is a member of the French national Academy of Pharmacy and of the French national Academy of Medicine. Among other awards, he has received the Pharmacy Academy Award for his PhD thesis, and the International Research Award of the French Society of Clinical Biology. Dr Cynober has presented over 140 invited lectures at international and national meetings, including the opening lecture at the Cannes ESPEN Congress 2003 and the Sir Cuthbertson lecture at the Vienna ESPEN Congress 2009. He has published more than 250 original research papers and more than 120 review papers. He is the editor of a book dealing with amino acids’ metabolism and therapy in clinical nutrition (published by CRC Press). His current major research interests relate to amino acid metabolism and therapy in critical illness, ageing and cancer, and assessment of nutritional and metabolic status. Mette M. BergerMette M. BergerMette M. Berger is an Intensive care physician, specialised in burn care and clinical nutrition. She obtained her M.D. from Lausanne School of Medicine, Switzerland, in 1979, and her Ph.D from the University of Umeå (Sweden) in 1996. She obtained a Nutritionist Diploma from the University of Nancy (France) in 1993, and a diploma in health economics at HEC in Lausanne in 2000. She is certified in Anesthesiology, Intensive care medicine, and clinical nutrition by the Swiss Medical board (FMH). Dr Berger has been the head of the EBA (European Burn Association) certified Lausanne Burn Center until 2020. Dr Berger is Honorary member of European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and Swiss Society of Clinical Nutrition (SSNC). Dr Berger was part of the organising committee of the two European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN) congresses organised in Geneva in 2009 and 2014. She is member of ESPEN-ICU guidelines group and has directed the publication of the first clinical micronutrient guidelines in 2022: she chairs the ESPEN's micronutrient special interest group. Dr Berger has contributed to developing the concept of individualised nutrition with nutrition therapy monitoring, promoting the use of indirect calorimetry. Committed to education, she has published multiple training documents. She is also LLL-ESPEN teacher and lectures worldwide in five languages. MMB has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications on nutritional therapy in critically illness, burn and trauma care, and micronutrients. SECTION EDITORS Jürgen BauerJürgen BauerIn September 2016, Juergen M. Bauer took over the newly established chair for geriatric medicine at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg, Germany. In 2010 he had been appointed director of the newly formed Geriatrics Centre Oldenburg, Germany, which since 2012 forms part of the medical campus of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. Between 2004 and 2010 he worked as assistant medical director at the Department of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. His research work and academic career was supported by a four-year scholarship of the Robert-Bosch-Foundation. Before moving into the field of geriatric medicine, Juergen M. Bauer was trained in gastroenterology and as a specialist in clinical nutrition. In recent years, Juergen M. Bauer's research interest has focused on nutrition and its relationship with functionality in older persons. He was a member of several international expert groups that worked on the definitions of sarcopenia and frailty in older persons. Between 2012 and 2015 he contributed to various consensus and research papers that focused on protein intake and amino acid supplementation in older adults. Juergen M. Bauer is a member of several national and international medical societies including the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). In 2010 he was honored to become a member of the ESPEN faculty. Since 2015 he is working as a co-editor of Clinical Nutrition. From 2007 until 2015 he was a member of the executive board of the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS). Since 2015 Juergen M. Bauer has been a member of the committee of the scientific advisors of the International Osteporosis Foundation (IOF) and in September 2016 Juergen M. Bauer was elected president of the German Geriatrics Society (DGG). In 2007 Juergen M. Bauer was awarded the honorary prize of the German Geriatric Society. Stéphane WalrandStéphane WalrandStéphane Walrand, MSc, PhD, is University Professor and Hospital Practitioner, in the University of Clermont Auvergne and Gabriel-Montpied Hospital, France. Professor Walrand graduated in 1990 with an honours degree in biological sciences. He received his master's degree in 1996 and he gained his PhD in 2000 in the specialty of clinical research, technological innovation and public health. In 2002, Professor Walrand joined the Laboratory of Molecular Endocrinology in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, as a post-doctoral fellowship under the direction of Professor Julius Brtko. He then joined INRA in 2002 as a research fellow. In 2004–2005, Professor Walrand joined the Endocrine Research Unit (Prof. KS Nair), Mayo Clinic and Foundation in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He was appointed as Director of Research at INRA in 2010 and as University Professor and Hospital Practitioner in 2018. He has performed the function of Deputy Director of the Human Nutrition Unit (Clermont-Ferrand, France) and co-leader of the Nutrition, Metabolism and Muscle Mass team (NuTrim). He is currently co-leader of the Diet, Muscle Health and Sarcopenia research team. The team has a long research tradition on skeletal muscle, protein and energy metabolisms, and dietary lipids and proteins, with specific emphasis on the crosstalk between skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The research programs of the team mainly focus on the impact of the ageing process and chronic diseases on muscle anabolic responses and impaired metabolisms. The objective of the team is focused on the preservation of mobility through new strategies involving nutrition and physical activity to improve muscle function and prevent sarcopenia-related comorbidities. Professor Walrand has collaborations with research groups in Australia, the US, Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands. He has a lot of expertise on muscle metabolism in various pathophysiological conditions and under different dietary constraints. Professor Walrand was a member of the Scientific Board of the French Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism and is currently a member of the Scientific Board of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. He is also one of the members on the board of experts of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety. He has lectured nationally and internationally. To his credit, Professor Walrand has published over 150 articles, which includes peer-reviewed manuscripts based on original research, abstracts and symposium presentations, reviews and numerous books and volumes. Rajavel ElangoRajavel ElangoDr Rajavel Elango is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, and School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He is also an Investigator at the Research Institute, BC Children's Hospital, Canada, and an associate member in the Human Nutrition Program at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, University of British Columbia. Dr Elango obtained his PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Alberta, Canada, and did his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. Dr Rajavel Elango's research program focuses on the identification of the dietary requirements for protein and amino acids and protein quality of foods during key stages of growth and development, such as pregnancy and in childhood malnutrition using state-of-the-art stable isotope techniques. His research also focuses on inborn errors of metabolism, and how non-invasive stable isotope-based techniques can be used as diagnostic tools to measure effectiveness of new treatment and management modalities. Dr Elango's international nutrition research is accomplished by collaborations with research institutes located in India. Dr Elango serves on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Nutrition, and he is a member of the American Society for Nutrition and Canadian Nutrition Society. Dr Elango was the recipient of the 2013 Vernon R. Young International Award for Amino Acid research from the American Society for Nutrition. Dr Elango was part of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 2014 Expert Working Group on methods to assess protein quality of foods, and the FAO 2017 Expert Working Group on Protein Quality Assessment in Follow-up Formula for Young Children and Ready to use Therapeutic Foods. Claire GaudichonClaire GaudichonClaire Gaudichon is Professor of nutrition at AgroParisTech (Université Paris-Saclay, Palaiseau, France). She has a recognised expertise in protein digestion and metabolism. She performs intervention studies in rodent models and in humans, particularly during the postprandial phase and using stable isotope methods. Prof. Gaudichon has published more than 100 articles in peer review journals in the field of nutrition and physiology in the view of understanding the consequences of varying protein intake (quantity and quality) on physiology and metabolism in healthy or vulnerable populations. She also manages the M2 cursus “Nutrition and Health” of Université Paris-Saclay and is the head of the research unit “Nutrition Physiology and Eating Behavior” (INRAE-AgroPArisTech).
