book with an intriguing history was further surrounded in mystery when in 2021 plates from a previously unknown, uncoloured copy were discovered on an auction website and are now under intense scrutiny for their provenance and origins.Johannes Muller's chapter considers the most famous of all ichthyology books, Marcus Bloch's (1723-1799) Natural history of fishes (1785-1797).It seems Bloch never travelled, certainly not outside of Europe, and so, while his descriptions and the details about fish close to home were pinpoint accurate, many in the later section of his book were only researched through the works of others, and so accumulated many inaccuracies, particularly with regard geographical distribution of various species.This last section concludes with two chapters on ichthyology from East Asia.Ching-Ling Wang's chapter on Chinese ichthyology describes how artists here tended to illustrate fish in a living context -'swimming, darting'in contrast to typical European portrayals, but it appears that some of their best work was inspired by, and produced for, a western market, much like their porcelain from the same era.Martien van Oijen has a fascinating chapter on how the Dutch, who were the only Europeans allowed to trade with Japan in the 1700s, first began to record Japanese fish and fishing.This culminated in Philipp Siebold's (1796-1866) huge and wonderful volume on fish, Fauna Japonica (1849), illustrated by local artist Keiga.The many other chapters in this book are also excellent and broad ranging in topic and style.Together they complement one another extremely well and give any reader who missed the conference that inspired this work a fabulous insight into the thinking and research directions of the best current historians of ichthyology.
