THE OPTOMETRY & VISION SCIENCE REVIEW PROCESS: HOW DOES IT WORK? Given the large number of submissions received by Optometry & Vision Science (OVS), we are no longer able to review all papers, and an initial selection process by the editor-in-chief and members of the editorial board is used to determine which papers are reviewed externally. Currently, about 50% of submissions are rejected without full review in this way. This process is fast, and authors receive a decision plus rationale in an average of 3 days. This approach is used to try to keep the ever-increasing reviewer workload to a minimum and to give authors a rapid response if a paper would ultimately be rejected. This is an important part of the review process, and I particularly thank the editorial board for their help in this regard. This triaging process also means that any paper that goes to full review is more likely to be accepted. Our current acceptance rate is 20% of all submissions and thus 40% of all papers going to full review. We have also decreased the time it takes for the whole review process, with the vast majority of papers being accepted at the first or second revision stage, and the time from initial submission to acceptance has been reduced from 173 days and near 6 months to currently 103 days or 3.5 months. We aim to reduce this still further next year. If a paper is chosen to go forward for full review, an editor is chosen by the editor-in-chief. This could be a member of the OVS editorial board, a feature issue or guest editor, or one of the topical editors. Reviewers are then chosen by the editor and invited to review the paper. The decision of whom to invite is based on several factors including editorial contacts, authors of cited papers, searches of keywords within the OVS reviewer database or PubMed or similar, and reviewers suggested by the authors. We have standardized to two reviewers per paper. OVS: a high-quality international journal The list of reviewers and editors who have helped the journal for the last year follows. While tabulating the list, I was struck both by the high quality of the reviewers and editors and by their international nature. Although 59% of reviewers and 36% of editors are US-based researchers, there are large numbers of reviewers and editors from all over the world. Optometry & Vision Science is very much a high-quality and international journal. Editorial board members, guest editors, and topical editors There are different types of editor at OVS. Editorial board members do the most editorial work and are particularly helpful in deciding which papers should receive a full review and then overviewing the review process before providing a decision to the editor-in-chief. Guest editors are recruited to help select editorial board members for special feature issues of the journal that this year were titled Advances in Visual Impairment Research (June 2024 issue) and Advances in Ocular Surface Research (September 2024 issue). These were hugely popular issues that brought large numbers of submissions and many high-quality publications. Last, but certainly not least, OVS currently has over 20 topical editors who are not listed on the journal's webpages, so their work is not widely known. Topical editors include older, perhaps even retired members of the editorial board who want to do less but would like to remain involved and have a huge amount of skill and experience. Other topical editors cover areas of optometry and vision science that need relatively little cover and/or they might be younger researchers who gain experience and mentorship toward full board membership. Thank you, reviewers and editors Our reviewers and editors do an amazing job for OVS. Reviewers provide the information needed for the editor to decide whether a paper should be accepted for publication, accepted after either minor or major revision, or rejected. Both reviewers and editors make numerous suggestions that often substantially improve submitted manuscripts and provide constructive advice that is also helpful for subsequent studies and reports. They perform this work without any remuneration, are asked to perform it within a short time period, and do all of this on top of their normal day job! I would therefore like to thank our reviewers and editors very much indeed for their support of the journal. These lists were provided by editorial solutions. They have been edited where I noticed an error, but I may have missed others, and there may also be omissions, for which I apologize.
