Résumé
It is a great pleasure to get a chance to write the preliminary notes for the first issue of a medical journal dedicated to the subject of Biochemistry. As this subject of Biochemistry is built upon an integrated hybrid concept of Biological sciences and Chemistry, it has its unabated foothold in almost every corner and each domain of life science; maybe it an isolated pure branch of life science or an all integrated medical science that comprises of so many branches of life sciences coming together.Furthermore, in the Biochemistry subject itself there is a holistic integration of some inherent components like theoretical Biochemistry in form of understanding of the metabolic and molecular basis of health and diseases of life and its applied counterpart that uses this knowledge of cognition for execution of laboratory investigations and research activities for benefit of the mankind. This is the reason why applied Biochemistry should never be considered as a separate entity from the theoretical or analytical biochemistry. It is nothing but the upper one fifth of the floating iceberg that is visible openly to the whole world with the vast major part submerged within the water but invisibly supporting the upper visible portion.Laboratory medicine is one of the most vividly expressed domain of the applied biochemistry that depends on years of sound theoretical knowledge along with a repeated hand on training and practice of different emerging techniques and tools that are continuously evolving throughout the world. With the advent of science and development of newer techniques of investigations of different diseases, the medical practice today, throughout the world is becoming more dependent on different types of lab investigations day by day.Biochemical investigations are not only required to make the initial diagnosis, but they have become essential now a days also for understanding the progress, prognosis and possible outcome of the disease with substantial accuracy and predictability. In the long run of time this has become more evident with evolution of newer diseases and our approaches to manage them. The most recent example of them is the Covid-19 pandemic. With the knowledge of the importance of changing levels of different interleukins, D-dimers and so many other biochemical and hematological parameters, the overall management protocol for this disease has become more streamlined and successful reducing the mortality rate significantly. So, laboratory medicine is there not only to help the clinicians now a days, but rather it has become an integral component of the total management protocol without which it is not possible to provide patient care service in a holistic way.A successful practice of lab medicine, on the other hand, depends on acquisition of a sound knowledge of applied biochemistry that begets from the crevices of deep theoretical concepts.Hence, we hope that the Journal of Applied Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine will be able to bring forward this integrated concept encompassing the most modern knowledge of biochemistry being expressed through their applications in medical research and advent of newer medical investigations and laboratory procedures for the benefit of mankind.
