Introduction for the Special Collection in the Honor of Scott Denmark
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
It is a pleasure for us to host this special issue for Prof. Scott Denmark in honor of his outstanding research and his recognition with the 2020 Paracelsus Prize. The selection of Prof. Denmark for the Paracelsus Prize from the Swiss Chemical Society was made well before the COVID pandemic. At the time, none of us expected the years of disruption and resulting challenges for the proper awarding of the prize. But at the same time, these delays allowed us to turn this well-deserved recognition into several years of celebration. We were treated first to a fantastic on-line lecture delivered by Prof. Denmark during the Swiss Chemistry Science Night 2021 in Bern – the event that would have been the occasion to grant him the award. Despite the beauty of this talk on September 9, 2021, a virtual event alone did not reach the proper level of ceremony and decorum for such an honor. We were therefore delighted to host Prof. Denmark for a SCS Lectureship in September 2023, where all had the pleasure of hosting him in person during the intense, weeklong lecture series at universities across Switzerland and the ability to properly honor him at the Swiss Chemistry Science Night 2023 (Figure 1) gala event. Despite the years of delay, or perhaps because of it, his science and connections to Switzerland were as fresh as ever, and we all enjoyed the prolonged interactions. In the background, friends and admirers of Prof. Denmark were secretly toiling away on contributions to this special issue of Helvetica in his honor. We were delighted to play a small part in coordinating this remarkable collection of diverse and thought-provoking science from contributions across the world. The 28 articles (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/toc/10.1002/(ISSN)1522-2675.Scott_Denmark_70) in this collection properly encapsulate Prof. Denmark's broad and insightful scientific endeavors. They include contributions ranging from polyaromatic hydrocarbons and organic polymers to drug design and medicinal chemistry to the chemistry of natural products and organic odorants. Some contributions touch on Prof. Denmark's recent interests in machine learning and models for understanding chemical properties, while others venture into chemical biology and process chemistry. Despite covering the whole gambit of modern molecular sciences, every author has a direct connection to Scott, making this a highly personalized connection that contributes to the decades long story of Prof. Denmark's deep connections to Switzerland.
