Active Removal of Harmful Radiation Belts byRocket Engine Burns Over Ground VLF Transmitters
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Satellites try to avoid impacts by energetic particles that damage solar panels and electronic components.  Whistler and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves can scatter trapped radiation into the atmospheric loss cone to reduce energetic particle fluxes.  The proliferation rocket burns during satellite launches and ISS reboost missions may reduce the populations of harmful radiation.  Rocket exhaust can artificially intensify low frequency (ELF/VLF) waves by Rocket Exhaust Driven Amplification (REDA). An on orbit demonstration of REDA used (1) a ground Navy ELF/VLF transmitter used as coherent wave source of 6 pt waves, (2) the firing a rocket motor over the transmitter forming an amplifying medium in the ionosphere and (3) a plasma-wave sensor on the Canadian SWARM-E.  The burn produced 300 pT whistler waves that rapidly reduce the lifetime of the radiation belts.     The whistler amplification process has been simulated with rocket engine burns in low earth orbit to create pickup-ion plumes with velocities of  4  – 10 km/s relative to the ambient ionosphere.  The amplification process starts with charge exchange between the exhaust molecules and the ambient O+ in the ionosphere to produce water vapor ions that spiral around the earth’s magnetic field lines.  This ion-velocity-ring distribution generates broadband, oblique-lower-hybrid (OLH) waves, which act as a pump for the parametric amplifier.  Nonlinear interactions of the pump promote spatial growth in the whistler waves as they propagate through the exhaust cloud.  The key features of the REDA process are broadband gain, bi-directionality along the magnetic field, pump depletion, phasing, and feedback.  Pump depletion limits the intensity of the output whistler waves by wave energy conservation.  The Whistler Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifier provides an efficient mechanism for Rocket Exhaust Driven Amplification (REDA) of signals in space. The hypersonic pickup ions stream across magnetic field lines to excite plasma waves that form an active region capable of exciting and amplifying extremely strong low-frequency whistler-mode waves capable of scattering energetic particles in the radiation belts.  A recent experiment used a 60-second burn of the Cygnus engine to amplify VLF signals at 300 Hz ELF and 25.2 kHz VLF by between 30 and 50 dB.   Several nonlinear theoretical models have been derived at NRL using parametric amplification and wave-particle interactions to explain this process.  The critical parameters are (1) the injection direction and velocity relative to the earth’s magnetic field lines and (2) the density of the ambient atomic oxygen ions.  These features are being tested with scheduled launches with a large range of engine flows at different altitudes and times of day.  Many opportunities exist to conduct REDA missions.  SpaceX is currently launching multiple Falcon 9 rockets with Starlink satellites deployed at fixed inclinations and de-orbit burns occurring repeatedly over the same geographic locations.  VEGA launches from French Guiana regularly have Attitude & Vernier Upper Module (AVUM) burns over the NAA VLF transmitter in Maine USA.     P.A.
