Experimental investigation on serviceability and strength of cold-formed steel I-joists for building construction
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Cold-formed steel (CFS) has been used in residential and commercial buildings as a cost-effective alternative to traditional wood materials. CFS provides a high strength-to-weight ratio, permitting longer spans and lighter structures. However, vibration serviceability issues may arise and cause building occupant discomfort. The available design methods to calculate the dynamic properties of floor systems (i.e., Canadian Wood Council Method, CWC; Applied Design Council Design Method, ATC; and Eurocode , EC5) are used for the design of light-frame timber-based systems, CFS C-shape joists, and structural steel and concrete floor systems. The applicability of such methods to I-shape CFS joists is as yet unavailable. In addition, the North American Code for Cold-formed Steel Structural Members (CSA-S136:16) provides specifications of serviceability and ultimate limit state design for only the C-shape joists. This paper presents laboratory results on the vibration and strength of a recently developed CFS I-shape joist in a floor system to recommend a reliable model for predicting the dynamic response of the floor system and compare its results with commercially-available engineered wood I-joists of the same depth and span length to provide a meaningful benchmark, allowing designers to assess how CFS joists perform relative to a widely accepted standard and established systems. This comparison directly aids the design process by providing a comparative framework, guiding code development, and ensuring practical implementation while highlighting the potential advantages of CFS I-joists. The experimental findings were compared with available code provisions for serviceability and ultimate limit state design of CFS joists. Experimental results reveal that the CFS I-joists exhibit superior deflection performance under a 1-kN load, with 36 % less deflection on average compared to engineered wood I-joists of equivalent size. Additionally, CFS I-joists demonstrated a 20 % higher natural frequency than wood I-joists, indicating better vibration performance. Based on the experimental findings, a coefficient γ, representing the ratio of shear deflection to flexural deflection for the CFS member, was developed, significantly improving the accuracy of deflection and frequency predictions. Finally, the CSA-S136:16 direct strength method provided a more precise bending strength prediction than the traditional equivalent width method. This research provides a comparative framework for designers, guiding code development and ensuring practical implementation while highlighting the advantages of CFS I-joists as a sustainable and efficient alternative.
