Résumé
Contos Populares Portugueses do Canadá/Portuguese Folktales from Canada is a bilingual edition that explores the rich tradition of Portuguese folklore through a comprehensive collection of tales that generations of Portuguese immigrants in Canada have passed down, reflecting the cultural heritage, identity, and storytelling practices of this community, even as they adapted to life in Canada. The 116 folktales compiled and transcribed by Manuel da Costa Fontes encompass a wide range of genres, including animal tales, tales of magic, religious tales, novelle, jokes and anecdotes, formula tales, and tales without classification, according to the taxonomy proposed by Paulo Jorge Correia, illustrating the richness of Portuguese folklore and the community's efforts to keep these stories alive. The book includes tales in both Portuguese and English, making the stories accessible to a broad audience while preserving their original linguistic flavor. Each tale opens with an extended summary in English that precedes the full transcription in Portuguese. Fontes’ work provides valuable insights into the everyday lives, values, and beliefs of Portuguese Canadians, yielding insights into how they navigate their dual cultural identity. With this work, Fontes enriches academic knowledge and preserves cultural traditions for future generations, ensuring that the tales are not only entertaining but also rigorously transcribed and classified. As a scholarly work, the book contributes to the fields of folklore studies, cultural anthropology, literature, linguistics, and migration studies, highlighting the importance of storytelling in cultural preservation and adaptation, which becomes especially pertinent in the contemporary context of a fast-disappearing oral tradition. The collection and ensuing organization of the volume are meticulous, based on interviewing 28 informants from Northern Portugal and the Azores who now live in Canada. The bilingual introduction contextualizes their journey with a history of Portuguese immigration to Canada. Correia classifies each folktale according to Hans-Jörg Uther's international catalog and also lists versions from the Portuguese-speaking world (Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Goa, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Timor), and from the Iberian cultural area (Spain, Spanish America, and the Sephardim). Four specialized appendices about vocabulary, informants, motifs, and tale types combine scientific research with the book's pragmatic utility for scholars. The book demonstrates the cultural continuity of Portuguese oral traditions and the diasporic experiences in a new country. Themes and motifs such as enchanted animals, moral lessons, religious elements, and rural life reflect the values, beliefs, and worldviews of the Portuguese people. While assuring the continuity of the common cultural narrative, there is still space for variations and embellishments that keep the tales relevant, especially when recited during festivals, holidays, and family gatherings, reinforcing communal bonds and cultural identity. Therefore, these folktales are also valuable educational resources, offering insights into the Portuguese Canadian experience, the process of cultural adaptation, and the ways in which immigrant communities maintain their heritage. The Portuguese Canadian immigrant experience is complex, albeit scarcely recognized by the media, academia, and institutions in general. Portuguese emigration to Canada began in significant numbers during the mid-twentieth century, driven by economic hardship, political instability, and the desire for better opportunities. The initial wave occurred in the 1950s and 1960s, when Portugal was under the authoritarian Estado Novo regime, and many Portuguese sought refuge from political repression and limited economic prospects. Portuguese immigrants settled primarily in urban areas such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, forming active communities that maintained strong cultural ties. They established social clubs, churches, and community centers, which became focal points for preserving their language, traditions, and cultural practices. These institutions also provided support networks, helping new arrivals navigate their new environment and integrate into Canadian society. The flow of immigrants has decreased in recent years, due to improved economic conditions in Portugal and changing immigration policies in Canada.Today, about 450,000 Canadians claim full or partial Portuguese ancestry, slightly lower than 480,000 in 2016. The majority reside in Ontario, particularly in Toronto's “Little Portugal,” where 26 of the 28 informants interviewed by Fontes lived. The community remains dedicated to preserving its cultural heritage, which is evident not only in the numerous Portuguese social clubs, churches, cultural centers, and festivals that celebrate Portuguese traditions, music, dance, and cuisine, but also in this book. However, the communities face increasing challenges such as the need to support aging immigrants, to address language barriers for new arrivals, and to ensure that younger generations remain connected to their cultural roots. This is precisely one of the book's main impacts, which simultaneously renders it relevant for wider audiences outside academia. Collecting folktales is a fundamental practice for preserving cultural identity, sustaining communal memory, and educating younger generations about their cultural roots. Folktales encapsulate the collective wisdom, values, and experiences of a community's historical and cultural heritage, making them indispensable for cultural preservation. At the heart of cultural identity is a shared narrative that binds individuals to a common history and set of values. Rich in cultural symbolism, folktales provide a window into the past, offering insights into how ancestors lived, what they valued, and how they understood the world. They recount historical events, local legends, and ancestral achievements, embedding these communal memories in engaging, often comic, ingenious, or poignant narratives, that reinforce community cohesion, collective experiences, and resilience. By collecting and preserving these tales, the book ensures that the communities of the diaspora maintain tangible links to their heritage, which becomes particularly important in an increasingly globalized world where dominant cultures overshadow minority cultural identities.Furthermore, folktales are instrumental in educating new generations. They serve as an accessible and engaging medium for imparting knowledge, moral values, and cultural practices. Through folktales, younger generations learn about their cultural and historical heritage in ways both entertaining and educational. The characters, plots, and moral dilemmas presented in these stories stimulate imagination and critical thinking, while also sharing important life lessons. In educational settings, folktales like the ones compiled here may teach linguistic skills through rich, descriptive language and narrative techniques. Moreover, these folktales can help readers understand and respect diverse cultures by highlighting universal themes and human experiences.Consequently, in order to enhance its public impact and educational potential in an era when digital media dominates, this volume might benefit from a digital edition. In fact, digital archiving and storytelling platforms enable the preservation and accessibility of folktale collections. This approach can revitalize widespread interest in folktales, encouraging both conservation and adaptation to contemporary contexts, as the cultural relevance of collecting folktales extends beyond mere storytelling.Time is relative and may have different meanings to different communities, depending on their journey. Contos Populares Portugueses do Canadá/Portuguese Folktales from Canada reflects these varying perspectives on time and memory within the complex idiosyncrasies of the Portuguese diaspora in Canada.
