Résumé
Abstract The neurohistological work of Berlin-based Jewish neuropsychiatric researcher Max Israel Bielschowsky (1869–1940) is that of a most innovative microanatomical investigator during the initial decades of the 20th century. With his forced exile to The Netherlands following his ousting from his government position under the Nazi regime in 1933, and his ultimate death in Britain in 1940, the German-speaking history of neuroscience lost a central protagonist for the thesis of structural plasticity in the central nervous system (CNS). Bielschowsky approached this research objective from several perspectives. His investigations on neuronal de- and regeneration stood in proximity to questions regarding the neuromorphological germ layers, along with the development of brain anatomy and structural pathology. Even though his contributions to brain research remain relatively underappreciated in 21st-century neuroscience history, Bielschowsky enlarged the insights into neurodevelopmental conditions, as well as Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s chorea, and Parkinson’s disease. At the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Brain Research in Berlin-Buch, he worked together with leading brain researchers of the time, such as Cécile Vogt (1875–1962), Oskar Vogt (1870–1959), and Korbinian Brodmann (1868–1918), joining them in ground-breaking pathohistological studies of neuronal de- and regeneration processes, as well as morphological definitions of the contours of “nervous trauma.” Although Bielschowsky did not maintain that forms of “planned reconstructive healing” of neural tracts in the brain and spinal cord were possible, he nevertheless defended the position that the CNS possessed significant compensatory properties. This had immediate methodological relevance for him. First, the exact course of neuropathologies needed to be phenomenologically studied before any histopathological diagnosis could offer new neuroscientific insights. Clinical phenomenology thus assumed an indispensable heuristic function for him. Second, a fully-fledged neuroscientific theory of de- and regeneration related to cortical “pathoarchitectonics” could only be conceived as a clinically and laboratory-based methodological ensemble.
