Résumé
Latinx environmentalisms refer to the varied forms of environmental knowledges, embodied and lived experiences, social movements, and cultural productions of those we might term Latina/o/x/e as well as to the interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary scholarship that examines the aforementioned epistemologies, ontologies, histories, experiences, and political efforts. How so-called Latinx communities envision (or not) the environmental and how that might differ from Western or white formulations is part and parcel of this work. Some scholars expose the exclusionary or white supremacist assumptions embedded in “mainstream” environmental thought. Others attend to the environmental injustices that Latina/o/x/e communities face, especially in urban areas and in agriculture. Increasingly, work showcases a variety of alternative environmental imaginaries and ethics in Latina/o/x/e literature, cultural production, and social movements. Much of this scholarship is intersectional with increasing attention given to queer ecologies, gender, and sexuality. Cultural geography has influenced scholars across fields, including those working in history and literature. Continued archival work reveals Latina/o/x/e contributions to conservation in US history. Careful consideration of space and place is widespread, particularly in relation to borderlands, manifest destiny, and belonging. Scholars attend to the various ways Latinx communities experience the outdoors and recreation, as well as how they create a sense of place through cultural practices. Historically, the field has disproportionately centered scholarship on Chicana/o/x/e environmentalisms, with particular attention to their relationship to land. Increasingly, scholars are attending to additional national heritages and pan-Latinx identities whose ecological thought has been underrepresented in the field. Mirroring the larger conversation around Indigeneity and settler colonialism in Latinx studies, Latinx environmentalisms increasingly grapple with the incommensurabilities between decolonial thought developed in Latin America and that which remains indebted to Indigenous studies developed in the United States and Canada. There is also growing attention to Indigenous and/or Afro-Latina/o/x/e experiences. This is particularly the case within scholarship in Latinx environmentalisms emerging from Latin American studies which frequently focuses on the pluriversity of knowledge systems. Each annotation defers to the identity terms (as in “Latino” or “Latina” or “Latina/o/x”) respective authors used in the summarized work; this recognizes the historical and cultural context each work discusses, the moment of each work’s production, and the decisions of its author.
