AN EXPERT COMMENTARY ON ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT IN THE IVF LABORATORY

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of using different types of incubators on workflow, organization, and quality management in the IVF laboratory and what parameters are considered when purchasing this essential equipment. DESIGN: A 15-question anonymous self-administered online survey was developed using Cognito software. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 51 respondents were recruited to complete the survey. Using a Likert scale survey recipients were asked their opinion on several statements, including how the number and type of incubators impacted workflow, organization, and quality management in the IVF laboratory. RESULTS: Embryologists and managerial embryologists made up 88% of respondents. The type of incubators increased efficiency in the laboratory of 83% of respondents. Large incubators were identified as more suitable for media equilibration while bench-top incubators better for embryo culture conditions because of the separate or smaller chambers. Embryologists identified temperature stability, gas consumption and recovery rates as critical parameters. Among respondents who identified as managerial level the majority (87%) reported brand and reputation as very important. Improved quality management was recognized by 85% of all respondents with emphasis on clear instructions, easy of use and increased efficiency upon adoption. It was also reported (89%) that to provide a controlled environment for gamete and embryos, the quantity of incubators should be adjusted according to the number of ART cycles to provide a steady and efficient workflow. Continuous maintenance, quality control and monitoring of equipment are essential and therefore service was identified as a critical component when considering the purchase of incubators (93%). Overall, all of respondents were satisfied with their choices and would likely consider new solutions from same supplier. CONCLUSIONS: This survey demonstrates a consensus among respondents that the choice of laboratory equipment, specifically incubators, has an impact on organization, workflow, and quality management in the IVF laboratory. Overall, the choice of essential equipment in the IVF laboratory increased efficiency, improved quality management and provided time savings for most respondents. SUPPORT: Astec-Bio
