Résumé
The SRPC concluded another excellent Rural and Remote Medicine annual conference in Winnipeg in April. A huge thanks goes out to co-chairs Drs. Sarah Lesperance and Selena Papetti, as well as the tireless efforts of the SRPC staff for putting on another amazing event. Thank you to the many of you who presented talks, hosted workshops and helped encourage your friends and colleagues to get involved. We are looking forward to seeing you all again in Quebec City on 16–18 April 2026, where co-chairs Drs. Nicholas Potvin and Dr. Michelle Lajzerowicz will no doubt create a gathering equally memorable. I would also like to welcome Dr. Sarah Giles as our new president-elect and thank Dr. Sarah Lesperance as she concludes her term as past president. Luckily, we will have a chance to gather very soon at the 2nd Annual Rural and MINI Remote Medicine Conference, taking place on 20 September 2025, in Regina, Saskatchewan. Hosted in conjunction with the Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians’ 71st Annual Family Medicine Conference, this conference offers an opportunity for folks to connect with the SRPC outside of our flagship conference while maintaining the same level of rurally relevant CME along with camaraderie and inclusivity. The SRPC staff will also be hard at work representing your organisation at various conferences, meetings and events to help our organisation grow. Your executive has been hard at work post R and R and we are engaging membership in a governance review of the organisation. Good governance is key to the growth of our organisation and will ensure we derive maximum benefit for our members and our communities. We have also been in discussions with both the Rural Doctors Association of Australia and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine to create formal memorandums of understanding between our like-minded organisations to strengthen our ties with them. We have a new federal government in place, and I am looking forward to meeting and working with all the new ministers whose policies shape how rural patients access health care. Federal funding was vital to the creation of our National Advanced Skills Training Programme, and we are exploring long-term funding solutions to sustain this work. The Caring for Canadians report released shortly before the election highlighted the deficits in generalist medicine for all Canadians, while further highlighting the more dire circumstances in rural Canada. Advocating for physician workforce portability, hopefully in the form of national licensure, is vital to help address these shortages. We hope to work with our federal colleagues to ensure equitable health access for all Canadians. Thank you again for all the work you do in caring for rural Canadians. Financial support and sponsorship: Nil. Conflicts of interest: There are no conflicts of interest.
