Pedro Henríquez Ureña

Abstract Pedro Henríquez Ureña, a distinguished Dominican intellectual, literary critic, and philologist, profoundly influenced Latin American and Caribbean literature and cultural studies. Born in Santo Domingo, he lived during the first half of the 20th century, a period marked by significant political, social, and literary transformations. Henríquez Ureña led a nomadic life, holding different appointments at various educational and governmental institutions across the Americas, including Argentina, Mexico, the United States, Cuba, and his native Dominican Republic. These changes of residence often stemmed from the political movements of the times in each country as they underwent the moments of social redefinition and ideological conflict that marked the rest of the century. From casual notes to deeply erudite studies, his extensive scholarship on literary history provides a comprehensive understanding of the literary currents in Latin America, emphasizing the interconnectedness and unique characteristics of Spanish American literatures. His cosmopolitan ideas and teaching influenced subsequent generations of writers, scholars, and critics who did not give up finding their continental perspective. From an early age, he found his vocation in literary criticism, among other arts such as theater and music. It was in the essay he found his laboratory of ideas. It is no coincidence, then, that in his seminal work, Seis ensayos en busca de nuestra expresión (1928), he explores the essence and idiosyncrasies of Latin American cultural expression. By tracing the intellectual lineage back to thinkers such as Simón Bolívar (1783–1830) and José Martí (1853–1895), he locates the region’s literary and cultural roots in its Indigenous, African, and European heritages without forgetting the legacy of the women who took up the pen. His work reflects a pan-Hispanic American perspective, transcending national boundaries and emphasizing a shared literary and cultural heritage on both sides of the Atlantic. Additionally, Henríquez Ureña was actively involved in the cultural and educational policies of the nations where he lived, from the formation of school curricula to the organization of research groups. Moreover, the richness of his thought, highly valued over the decades, has become a reference for all genealogical attempts in the intellectual and artistic history of the continent.
