In 1996, Jennifer S. H. Brown and Elizabeth Vibert’s edited volume, Reading Beyond Words, argued that it takes patience to recover and communicate the experiences and perspectives of those for whom the historical record is lacking or limited by the interpretation of others. In his work Health in the Highlands, David Carey Jr. takes on this challenge through an examination of public health within Indigenous communities in Guatemala and Ecuador. The book positions at its center the experiences of indígenas, teasing out their perspectives and interactions from outsider sources during an intense period of labor coercion and land colonization between the 1870s and 1930s in Latin America. Although Indigenous experiences with health care have been difficult at best to ascertain, Guatemala and Ecuador provide critical case studies, as these two countries have high proportions of Indigenous populations that make their erasure from the national archives impossible. The book is organized thematically over six main chapters, weaving together the connections among modernization, indigeneity, and medicine. Through an examination of the interactions among an array of actors, Carey’s research like roots of a tree tap into social, economic, and political soils. Beginning with the assertion that conceptions of health were bound up with concepts of the nation, Carey pursues a transnational analysis that destabilizes states and corporate entities as interpretive lenses in favor of analyzing power dynamics through body experiences and Indigenous encounters with illness and healing, along with the circulation of theories of race and racial difference. This work draws from a variety of archives, including the Rockefeller Archive Center, the Archivo General de Centroamérica and Academia de Geografía, Revista Militar, Revista Agricola, Government and Public Health Memorias in Guatemala, and the Museo de Medicina and the Archivo Nacional del Ecuador in Ecuador.
