The Effectiveness of the Psycho-Nutritional Intervention Approach (PNIA) in Enhancing Functional Independence, Psychological Well-being, and Quality of Life in Older Adults
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The rapid increase in the world’s older population has forced health systems to ask a difficult question: how should aging be approached when survival alone is no longer enough? For most of the twentieth century, the emphasis was on pharmacological treatment and the management of chronic disease. That model saved lives, but it also left many problems unsolved loss of independence, social withdrawal, and emotional decline remained largely untouched. In recent years, a different view has gained ground. Aging, it is argued, should be treated not simply as a biological process but as a lived experience shaped by mind, body, and community. The Psycho-Nutritional Intervention Approach (PNIA) is an attempt to respond to this broader challenge. It draws together strands that have usually been kept separate: psychological counseling, a largely plant-based diet informed by sattvic principles, yoga and controlled breathing practices, mindfulness meditation, and creative activities such as music and cognitively stimulating games. None of these methods is new; each has its own literature. What distinguishes PNIA is the deliberate attempt to bind them into a single, practical framework that can be applied in community and clinical settings. This paper considers how PNIA may influence daily functioning, emotional resilience, and cognitive stability in older adults. To capture these effects, well-established geriatric tools are proposed, including the Katz Index of Activities of Daily Living, the Lawton–Brody scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale, the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Early pilot programs and wellness camps, though modest in scale and not without their limitations, suggest encouraging results. Participants frequently reported greater ease in self-care, brighter mood, and a renewed sense of social connection. Taken together, these observations indicate that PNIA may offer more than symptom relief. By combining modern gerontological insights with traditional Eastern practices, it opens the possibility of viewing old age not simply as decline but as a stage in which resilience, meaning, and new forms of growth can still be cultivated.
