Limitations of current-optimal Dual Active Bridge modulation strategies
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
In this article a novel frequency domain-based numerical optimization algorithm is developed to calculate multi-variable PWM control strategies for the Dual Active Bridge that optimize the RMS current circulating in the linkage inductor. The algorithm is adaptable to the number of harmonics for increased solution accuracy, and feeds forward optimal results for increased speed. The article then applies this algorithm to two- and three-variable modulation strategies and reproduces EPS and TPS, proving an effective new way to numerically calculate these existing modulation strategies. The frequency-domain and mutli-harmonic description of the problem enables clear and precise conclusions on the nature of RMS-optimal modulation strategies. Notably, one of these conclusions is the presence of an unavoidable zero current switching boundary that exists in the operational domain and separates zones of ZVS and ZCS operation. This boundary is then analytically derived for use in control strategies. As commutation at zero or non-negative currents can introduce significant switching losses, knowledge of this boundary is crucial for Dual Active Bridge converter design. The article terminates by experimentally studying the behavior of the EPS and TPS modulation strategies in the vicinity of this boundary. Both the analytical and experimental results show that EPS, despite its higher RMS current relative to TPS, is more efficient at low powers due to its reduction of PZVS operation. • The DAB converter is modeled in the frequency domain to develop a singular mathematical framework for multi-variable PWM modulation strategies and to avoid case disjunction. • An optimization algorithm is developed to minimize the RMS current and respect the ZVS constraints. • An analytical expression is derived for a ZCS boundary that must appear in sufficiently large converter operational domains. • Experimental results compare the behavior of EPS and TPS current-optimal modulation strategies in the vicinity of this boundary. • This ZCS boundary precludes ZVS operation for real transistors and therefore it is imperative to consider it in the hardware and software design for DAB converters.
