Tracing basin-scale circulation of Hg from multiple sources using paleolimnological, approaches, sediment long-term monitoring data and isotopic fingerprinting: a case study from Lake Maggiore (Italy/Switzerland)
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The ubiquitous nature of mercury contamination complicates the understanding of its behavior in aquatic ecosystems suffering from legacy pollution. By combining paleolimnological approaches, long-term monitoring and isotopic fingerprinting, we reconstructed the chronology of Hg contamination from multiple sources in sediment cores of Lake Maggiore (Italy/Switzerland). Anthropogenic Hg contamination spanned at least 400 years, from the early 17 th century until the end of the 20 th century, with inputs from artisanal and industrial gold mining, hat making and chlor-alkali production. Total Hg concentrations ranged from natural background levels of about 0.1 mg kg -1 to 25 mg kg -1 at the peak of Hg releases from a chloralkali plant in the first half of the 20 th century. This industrial Hg had a distinctly lighter 202 Hg signature compared with natural Hg and moved as far as the southernmost part of the lake. Sediments impacted by gold mining activities had a 202 Hg signature indistinguishable from natural Hg, despite Hg concentrations much higher than background levels. Similarly, no specific 202 Hg signature could be determined for the Hg used in hat making and a combination of paleolimnological and monitoring information was used to establish the possible extent of Hg contamination from this source. Mercury contamination has decreased steadily since the early 2000s, but total Hg levels remain above background values, especially in the southern part of the lake. According to model calculations, Hg in sediments should return to background levels between 2040 and 2100, but the agreement between these estimates and recent observations varies across sampling site.
