Dr. Marvin Tile, a true giant within the orthopaedic community, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, after a remarkable life that has influenced generations of surgeons and reshaped trauma care around the world. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Esther; their 4 children, Gary, Stephen, Andrew, and Deborah; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His passing is grieved by countless colleagues, patients, and friends, but his legacy of leadership, innovation, and service will live on through those who had the privilege of knowing him and learning from him. Marvin was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1933 to Samuel and Annie Tile, who had the foresight to leave Poland in the late 1920s before World War II began. His parents’ decision to leave Poland when they did was the first “fork in the road” that Marvin would reference as having had a major impact on his life journey, alluding to his beloved Robert Frost poem “The Road Not Taken.” Marvin attended Harbord Collegiate Institute and subsequently the University of Toronto Medical School, during which time he met Esther, the love of his life and a constant companion on his later academic trips around the world. He met Esther at the town pier in cottage country on Lake Simcoe, where he witnessed her execute, as he said many times, “a perfect swan dive into the lake.” He was smitten instantly. The courtship was short, and they married in June 1954 only a few months after meeting. Marvin played for 3 years on the senior basketball team of the University of Toronto, where, as he later wrote in his book Severed Roots, “the connection between sports and trauma…and the ability to do good and to see your results almost immediately” drew him to orthopaedic surgery. After graduating with a medical degree in 1957, Dr. Tile began working with his mentor Dr. George Pennal, who nurtured Dr. Tile’s interest in musculoskeletal trauma and, in particular, pelvic and acetabular injuries. At that time, these injuries were mainly treated in traction, with poor patient outcomes and often lifelong immobility and pain. In 1963, Dr. Tile was awarded the 2-year Detweiler Travelling Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Between 1963 and 1965, he visited Sir John Charnley, who had just invented the low-friction total hip replacement; Dr. Gerhard Küntscher, who had pioneered intramedullary nailing; Robert Judet (and Judet’s young resident at that time, Emile Letournel, who went on to revolutionize our understanding and treatment of pelvic and acetabular injuries); and the spine unit of Carl Hirsch and Alf Nachemson. Toward the end of his traveling fellowship, Dr. Tile traveled to London, United Kingdom, where he arrived on February 15, 1965—which was, as he would later tell us, coincidentally the date that the current Canadian Maple Leaf flag was unfurled. During lunch with some registrars at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dr. Tile heard that there was reportedly some interesting fracture work being performed in Switzerland. Although he had never heard of the Swiss organization called AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen) or Dr. Maurice Müller, he decided to take the road “less traveled” and visit Maurice Müller in St. Gallen to learn what was new and groundbreaking at that time. That visit represented another transformational “fork in the road,” as Dr. Tile would later recall, that led to his lifelong passion for excellence in trauma and fracture management. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Dr. Tile, inspired by his fellowship experience, devoted his career to the service of people with traumatic injuries and arthritis. In 1966, Dr. Tile was appointed to the surgical staff at the University of Toronto. In 1971, he became Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he was instrumental in the development of the internationally renowned Sunnybrook Trauma Unit that opened in 1976. It was Canada’s first—and is still the country’s largest—trauma center, as well as the first center outside of the U.S. to be fully verified as a Level-I trauma center by the American College of Surgeons. In 1981, Dr. Tile was promoted to full professor at the University of Toronto, and, from 1985 through 1996, he was Surgeon in Chief at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Tile chaired the Sunnybrook Foundation from 1996 to 2002 and the Foundation of the Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto between 2006 and 2009. Throughout his career, Dr. Tile fostered excellence through his teaching, publications, and leadership. He promoted the development of a deep understanding of not only the principles underlying fracture-healing and fixation but also the need to listen to and understand patients and their families. Dr. Tile taught us to challenge conventional wisdom, and he respectfully listened to arguments against treatments such as delayed weight-bearing or immobilization after surgery, even if it went against his own current practice. “Today’s wisdom is tomorrow’s heresy,” he would say. He had a lifelong hunger for knowledge and self-improvement that he also instilled in others. Dr. Tile loved to debate everything from politics to science, but he always did so respectfully and with an open mind—a refreshing, but sadly rare, occurrence in today’s world. His awards and leadership positions are legion. He chaired the Examining Board in Orthopaedic Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He was the founding President of the Ontario Orthopaedic Association as well as President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and President of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. Additionally, in 1992, Dr. Tile became President of AO International, the organization that had inspired him almost 3 decades earlier (the AO in memoriam tribute to Dr. Tile can be found online at https://www.aofoundation.org/who-we-are/about-ao/news/2025/Marvin-Tile-obituary). Dr. Tile was named a Patron to the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation. He established the Marvin Tile Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in 2005. In 2009, Dr. Tile was awarded the Order of Canada. He contributed a large number of publications, including 2 seminal textbooks on fracture fixation and pelvic and acetabular injury treatment that are both still in circulation today. More recently, he was instrumental in assembling support for an ambitious project at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre that aims to understand the interactions of, and to develop, expert teams of nurses, anesthetists, x-ray technicians, and surgeons in the operating room and in a simulation laboratory, with the goal of improving the quality of patient care and outcomes to the highest possible level. Above all, Marvin enjoyed sharing his thoughts with trainees and colleagues. Marvin, like all great teachers, was a master storyteller, with a magnetic personality that filled any space that he entered. He was also genuinely interested in, and sought out, other people’s stories. He made everyone whom he encountered, whether a colleague, trainee, patient, or someone he just met in the hallway, feel valued and special. Although he was honored with the highest accolades and awards for his work, Marvin’s proudest moments were when those whom he had mentored in his personal and professional life achieved success. He took pride in bringing out someone’s potential, and he was particularly delighted to have mentored so many leaders within the orthopaedic community around the world. Marvin and Esther Tile considered all of his mentees to be a part of their extended family, and they enjoyed hosting them at home in Toronto or visiting them abroad. When he wasn’t mentoring regarding surgery, Marvin was life coaching. Although Marvin loved to talk, and his lectures always went overtime (we would often tell him that he had half the time that was actually allotted in the schedule), he was also good at listening and guiding people to figure things out for themselves. Marvin remained engaged and active to the very end. He continued to write his weekly “blog” to friends and family, up to and including the final days, when he was admitted to the hospital for the last time. There are so many memories and so many stories that we will be sharing throughout the community for many years to come. Here are some of Marvin’s own words from recorded talks and lectures: “Don’t be afraid to challenge conventional wisdom. Today’s conventional wisdom will be tomorrow’s heresy. But understand and rely on the principles and change only to improve and not just for the sake of change.” “The lasting memories I have are of people in my extended family: patients who have supported me beyond belief, my surgical colleagues, my mentors, my fellows and my family.” “Remember you can balance your surgical and family life. Failure to do so will lead to your worst problems.” We will dearly miss this great man—our colleague, our friend, our mentor, and our family member. We will miss his generosity and his sense of humor, as well as debating with him and learning from him. Marvin’s life has reverberated around the world, touching the lives of people everywhere through his work and through the work of those he taught. His is an enduring legacy indeed. T.S.A. H.F. J.H.
