and the poorest.In other words, social Christianity had its roots in both 'paternalism and socialism' (11).While it is true that many Christian churches slowly moved from more conservative approaches to reform to more liberal ones, the narrative is complex.Churches are comprised of members who have their own feelings on mission and theology, and it is not unexpected that these would influence how congregations approached society's problems.This collection stays away from the saints and sinners' narrative-concern, for example, certain actions may result in a loss of mission identity is a fair position-while recognizing that there will always be a 'gap' between conservative and liberal responses.All of this insight adds to our understanding of social Christianity, and this book has much to offer to both the scholarly and casual reader.While a reviewer should rarely spill ink on what is not in a bookespecially true in the case of this fine collection-despite the articles exploring issues in Europe and the United States, the focus of this book on Scotland is particularly interesting.As a historian of the Canadian Christian experience, I cannot help but mention the celebrated program of Catholic social action that came out of eastern Nova Scotia in the early decades of the twentieth century (which was eventually transported to Latin America).Twice commended by the pope, the 'Antigonish Movement' was a grassroots program of adult education, cooperatives, and credit unions that was mostly shaped by the great-grandchildren of Highland Scottish Roman Catholics who had migrated to Nova Scotia in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.It occurred in a different context from the papers in this collection but does add support to the argument that Scotland's people had a unique understanding of Christian social action.
