As of 15 April 2006, only two survivors, both women, from the Titanic remained alive. other 2200-plus passengers died during that terrible maritime disaster or later, after having survived the ordeal. Other than the three dedicated burial plots in Halifax, Nova Scotia, (1) the deceased victims and survivors were interred, entombed, or cremated in several countries crossing vast geographical boundaries. Many of the markers and crypt covers do mention the connection between the individual and Titanic; however, it is the site off the Grand Banks on the ocean floor that has been designated internationally as the official gravesite of the Titanic and that of its initial victims (Ballard 210). First class cabins and suites were rivaled by no others provided by competitive shipping lines, second class cabins were also very impressive by their design and appointments, and those among the third class or steerage bookings were not uncomfortable by any means. Although interest in the Titanic has never really waned, periodically a renewed interest or booster shot, if you will, is administered that revitalizes the interest for the next generation. release of James Cameron's film version of Titanic in 1997 is a good illustration of this kind of renewal. Following its box office success and the scheduling of several national exhibits by Titanic, Inc., the research component emerging from Robert Ballard's discovery a little more than a decade earlier, the general public was not only mesmerized by the film but also began to seek as much information as possible to satisfy both an intellectual and popular curiosity. (3) Fast approaching is Titanic's centennial, which will once more cause a resurgence of strong popular interest. That event will surely generate an unequaled popular obsession for the terrible tragedy of 1912. By then, there will most likely be no survivors remaining, and the physical remnants of the ship itself will be no more. (4) As long as the printed word exists, written narratives and accounts together with scholarly investigations and treatises will continue to keep the story of the RMS Titanic from fading and eventually disappearing into the abyss of failing human memory. …
