It is good to see Canada well in the forefront of the national History of the Book movement, with volumes 1 and 2 already published within a year of each other and volume 3, which will bring the story to 1980, planned and on the way. By contrast, only two of the planned seven-volume set of the Cambridge History of the Book in Britain have appeared since 1999, and only one, in 2000, of the History of the Book in America. Both of these are, of course, considerably larger projects, but much depends on the human resources at all stages to meet deadlines and move them on. The UTP and its editorial team, as well as the contributors, are to be warmly congratulated. The history of books is now recognised as being a vital element of human history and of the development of societies, economies, ideas and cultures, and not an esoteric interest for bibliophiles, rare-book librarians and a few specialist historians. The History of the Book in Canada is a vital thing: a history of Canada through the communication media of the times (manuscripts and non-letter symbols, printing and publishing). Perhaps the most impressive aspect of these volumes is the editors' achievement in commissioning and collecting articles written by specialists, on specialist as well as general topics, but for the general reader. This is an extremely approachable work, and a great pleasure to use, especially for those given to higher browsing and serendipity. It is, in a word, absorbing. You find what you are looking for, via the excellent indexes, and read that, and then discover that the next or the preceding piece is also of interest or use, so you read that too, and then you wonder what else there might be elsewhere in the volume. Before you know it, an hour has gone by, and you are much better informed than when you first opened the book. In each section of the work themes from substantial articles, such as Fiona Black's 'Importation and Book Availability' (volume 1) and Paul Hjartarson's 'Print Culture, Ethnicity, and Identity' (volume 2) are developed in shorter specialised pieces, and illustrated by wellchosen case studies in particular publications, people or companies. …
