The redevelopment of the former RBS data centre site near Eyre Terrace, Edinburgh required its demolition along with four other buildings that comprised a series of 20th century industrial sheds and a former house and stables built in 1901. The former RBS data centre was built in 1971 but had been refurbished and expanded to suit the needs of 21st century banking. The building spanned five floors, three of which were below ground. The building comprised two large blocks, the original 1970s construction and a 1980s extension, linked by a modern glass-fronted link building. Four other buildings within the proposed site boundary included two large former engineering works sheds, and a small ancillary building dating to the 1950s. The oldest structure was a house and stable which was derelict and further reduced to a shell by fire in 2020. The building's style lay firmly in the Arts and Crafts Period with mullioned windows, terracotta ridge tiles and ball finials. A demolition watching brief showed the internal divisions and new rooms added to the loft floor. An archaeological evaluation was also carried out by CFA to identify any remains associated with the Royal Gymnasium that incorporated an amphitheatre and leisure facilities which included curling and skating rinks. Fragmentary remains associated with the Royal Gymnasium were identified within five of the nine excavated trenches. In three of the trenches walls surviving as single courses of brick were identified these were interpreted as the vestigial remains of the circular rotary boat, as was a fragmentary tile surface. These remains were located between 2.5m and 3.1m below the current ground surface. A fragmentary concrete surface and a section of brick wall appeared to be part of a small building annotated Statuary Room on the 1876 Ordnance Survey Town Plan. No surviving elements of the Show Hall or Refreshments Bar were located.
