An evaluation comprising 11 test pits, each measuring 4m x 4m, was conducted by Oxford Archaeology East for a proposed new Sainsbury's superstore and associated facilities on land off St John's Street, Huntingdon. The proposed site is within a former industrial area on the west side of Huntingdon. The western part of the site was not subject to evaluation as it has been previously demonstrated to have been severely truncated by 19th century quarries. Most of the warehouses and other buildings had been demolished prior to the start of the works, although thick layers of reinforced concrete and numerous buried services remained. The natural landfall of the site is generally from south-west to north-east, however previous development has created three broad terraces, with the lowest being adjacent to St John's Street and the highest towards Brampton Road. It was on the central/western part of the upper terrace where the best preservation of archaeological features and deposits was encountered. Despite the presence of occasional medieval pottery sherds, no medieval features survived on the lower two terraces. Three adjacent test pits within the upper terrace contained ditches, one of which produced a small quantity of medieval pottery; a single small pit was also identified. These are likely to have been drainage/boundary ditches demarcating small fields or plots. Towards the later part of the medieval period the ditches became defunct and a ploughsoil developed over this part of the site, the latest pottery from which dates to the 14th century. This may relate to the town's economic downturn and contraction during this period. Animal bone and other finds within this layer were probably introduced to these fields as middening/manuring from nearby properties. Cartographic evidence indicates that much of the site was given over to pasture in the post-medieval period and this is probably represented by a former topsoil/layer recorded overlying the medieval soil in a number of test pits. Evidence of Huntingdon's economic growth and industrial development was found in some of the test pits on the lower terrace. A possible deep infilled cellar or quarry was identified in the northern part of the terrace that may relate to buildings shown on the early Ordnance survey maps of the town, while to the east a possible internal wall within one of the two Malthouses that once occupied the site was revealed. The small size of the finds assemblage implies that the site was located away from the main areas of occupation, although this may also be a reflection of the (necessarily) small trench sizes. On current evidence the site appears to have low potential for the survival of environmental (plant) remains.
