Universal\nPhase Transformation Mechanism and Substituted\nAlkyl Length and Number Effect for the Preparation of Overbased Detergents\nBased on Calcium Alkylbenzene Sulfonates

Overbased calcium sulfonate is one\nof the largest commercially\nproduced nanomaterials; the phase transformation mechanism involved\nin the key process of carbonation reaction for overbased detergent\npreparation has not yet been fully understood. Following our previous\ninvestigation based on the heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (HABS) surfactant\nof industrial byproduct, two commercial products with well-defined\nchemical compositions and structures, long-chain alkylbenzene sulfonate\n(LCABS) and comparative short-chain linear alkylbenzene sulfonate\n(SLABS), are employed in this study as model surfactants for further\nmechanism study of this pivotal process by the combination of analytical\ntechniques such as potentiometric titration, DLS, TEM, FTIR, and XRD.\nIt has been demonstrated that amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is\na prerequisite for the preserving and stabilization of the alkaline\nreserve, especially under thermal work environment. The phase transformation\nfrom ACC to crystalline vaterite polymorph rather than calcite has\nbeen unambiguously confirmed as a universal mechanism for all the\nalkylbenzene sulfonate based systems. Furthermore, the length and\nnumber of alkyl tails of alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants exhibit\na strong influence on characteristics of detergent products. The LCABS\nwith long-chain alkyl substituents or HABS with dialkyl substituents\nplays an important role not only in inhibiting the agglomeration process,\nbut also in protecting the metastable inorganic cores from fusion\nto avoid phase transformation. Such understanding should be of crucial\nimportance for guiding the preparation of overbased detergents and\ngreases. In addition, the study on the influence of the molar ratio\nof calcium oxide in the total alkaline calcium salts and the dosage\nof surfactant LCABS, promoter methanol, and catalyst anhydrous calcium\nchloride help to determine the suitable work window for detergent\nproduction, and moreover, the water content provides a handle for\nbetter understanding the reaction process and achieving good quality\ncontrol for detergent manufacturing.
