Jacques came to Maryknoll in 1924 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1927. That same year he began his almost forty year mission work in Fushun, Manchuria. In 1948 he was assigned to Kweilin where he worked until he was expelled to Hong Kong in 1950. He spent many years in Taiwan. -- Born in Maryland, Fr. Hewitt came to Maryknoll in 1921 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1930. He worked in Fushun, Manchuria for sixteen years and then in 1946 was assigned to the faculty at the Venard minor seminary. He worked in the promotion department and was appointed controller of the public relations department. He retired in California. -- Rev. Gilbert was born in Grosvenordale, CT. He entered The Venard, Maryknoll's Apostolic College in 1917 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1927 and assigned to Fushun, Manchuria. He became adept at Mandarin, and after a year's home leave in 1935, he returned to Fushun. He was interned by the Japanese in 1941, and repatriated on the refugee ship Gripsholm in 1943. He worked for a year in U.S. Japanese internment camps. Afterwards he remained in the U.S. doing promotion work -- Born in Nebraska, Fr. Hohlfeld came to Maryknoll in 1926 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1934. After ordination, he was assigned to the Maryknoll mission in Fushun, Manchuria. He was assigned to the Fushun Junior Seminary where he remained until war broke out in the Pacific. In 1941 he was interned by the Japanese in Fushun and in 1942 repatriated to the United States aboard the Gripsholm. He spent time in the Puno, Peru mission and was librarian at the junior seminary in Brookline, Massachusetts. -- Born in Connecticut, Fr. Walsh came to Maryknoll in 1931 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1933. He was assigned to work in Japan but after six months transferred to Maryknoll's Japanese and Korean mission in Antung, Manchukuo where he served for eight years. During World War II he was interned by the Japanese and; Interned there at the outbreak of WWII, he was repatriated aboard the Swedish repatriation ship Gripsholm in 1942. Afterwards he worked in Latin America and the U.S.; Born in Massachusetts, Bishop Lane came to Maryknoll in 1913 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1920. In 1923 he went to Hong Kong to become the procurator of that mission. Two years later he went north and inaugurated the Fushun mission in Manchuria. In 1932 Monsignor Lane was appointed Prefect Apostolic and in 1940 Vicar Apostolic. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1940. After Pearl Harbor, Bishop Lane was interned by the Japanese in Fushun. Within a year of prepatriation, Bishop Lane was elected to be the third Superior General of Maryknoll. His tenure led to the greatest expansion at home and abroad for Maryknoll.
