Hydrophilus (Dibolocelus) ovatus Gemminger and Harold, 1868 (Figs. 3, 9) Hydrophilus ovalis Ziegler, 1844: 45 (primary homonym of Hydrophilus ovalis Brullé, 1837 and Hydrophilus ovalis Laporte de Castelnau, 1840). Dorsum black and often exhibiting a greenish tint when viewed under directed light or under water. Antennal cupule dark, short, often rounded, and not entirely covering the first antennal club segment. Abdominal pubescence restricted to midline of ventrites 3–5. Maxillary palps of males modified with third segment flattened and widened. Protarsal claws of males enlarged but subequal in size and shape. Fifth protarsal segment slightly widened in males. This species can easily be distinguished from all other North American Hydrophilus by the glabrous region being restricted to the midline of abdominal ventrites 3–5, the bilobed prosternum, and the shortened, dark, and rounded antennal cupule. Distribution (Fig. 9). Remarks. This species can be common in eastern North America in a variety of standing water habitats such as ponds and marshes. States marked with an asterisk (*) indicate new state records. Although listed in Hansen (1999), Quebec and Connecticut have been excluded from the distributions because the papers with these records could not be located.
