St Mary's Church, Swaffham Bulbeck

Résumé
In response to the requirements of the planning consent and a Diocesan Faculty, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the St Mary's Parochial Church Council to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of renovation and drainage works at St Mary's Church, Swaffham Bulbeck, Cambridgeshire. The works revealed a single articulated burial at the impact depth of the soakaway, at a depth of 1.20m below the existing ground surface. The burial which was aligned east - west showed no evidence for a coffin, suggesting a simple shroud burial. It was covered and left in situ. The excavations produced a large amount of disarticulated human bone, of which, a larger quantity was collected from the churchyard where some of the bones were in good condition and complete. They were collected and handed to the churchwarden and reburied at the end of the groundworks, in a grave dug in the southern churchyard. The only observed feature of interest consisted of a stone slab threshold into the South Aisle, which had incised decoration on its lower face and may have originally formed part of a coffin lid. A small amount of post medieval finds were collected and handed to the church warden. These included clay pipe, a glass bottle base and three sherds of a flange rimmed dish of brown glazed urban ware, of probable 18th Century date. No evidence for significant archaeological activity was encountered during the course of the works within the South Porch and churchyard. The works involved the installation of a WC in the south porch and associated drainage works. The only recorded feature of interest was part of the stone threshold into the south aisle. The upper limestone slab forming the threshold had a much degraded relief carved double mega motif on its lower face and is likely to have originally formed part of a coffin lid originating in Barnack and dating to the 12th/13th century. The stone has been reused as the new threshold to the south porch. A single articulated burial was encountered at the impact depth of the soakaway, approximately 1.20m below the existing ground surface. The burial, which was aligned east - west, showed no evidence for a coffin suggesting a simple shroud burial. It was protected and left in situ. The investigations across the site produced a large amount of unstratified and disarticulated human bone, which was collected and handed to the churchwarden for reburial on site at the conclusion of the groundworks. A small quantity of unstratified post-medieval artefacts was also noted.
