The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is celebrating 25 years since its legislative formalization on 29 September 1999 - 2024, even though the INGV has its roots in much older institutions such as the Vesuvius Observatory of 1841, the National Institute of Geophysics of 1936, and other historic institutes of the CNR. Over the last quarter of a century, the INGV has grown enormously, and with this publication, we wanted to document how it has come of age, developing thanks to the commitment and passion of all its contributors: from the founders, to those who have dedicated, and still dedicate, their professional commitment to its scientific growth on a daily basis. In recent years, the INGV has enhanced the monitoring and surveillance of seismic, volcanic, and tsunami activity, and has developed countless scientific research topics, ranging from space meteorology to the most hidden structures of the Earth, from the magnetic field to gaseous emissions. The INGV performs crucial functions for scientific research and operates as an operational structure of the National Civil Protection System. It does so with its approximately 1200 motivated staff members who contribute to cultural growth and the public good, and thanks to the development of its observational systems, coordinated by the three Departments (Environment, Earthquakes, Volcanoes), and its ten Sections (National Earthquake Observatory, Vesuvius Observatory, Etna Observatory, Milan, Bologna, Pisa, Rome 1, Rome 2, Irpinia, Palermo), supported by the Central Administration. Its infrastructures, such as seismic, geodetic, hydrogeochemical, magnetic, gravimetric and ionospheric networks, record every variation in terrestrial parameters. The seismic network alone records over 15,000 earthquakes in Italy every year, roughly one every 30 minutes. We must make it clear how essential and indispensable the study of the Earth is, to pass on to future generations the knowledge and the strength to continue our journey of understanding the Planet, to defend it, to find the indispensable resources for the livelihood of a nation, but also for the whole of humanity. It is well known that a picture is worth a thousand words: telling the story of 25 years of INGV is a monumental task, given the enormous amount of work carried out by all the staff of the Institute. This work illustrates field activities, even in dangerous places, laboratory analyses, the meetings that have established its institutional role, and the development of infrastructures. A fundamental work to improve knowledge of the Earth’s geological structure and awareness of the natural hazards and resources of our Planet, particularly in Italy. Knowledge that grows daily thanks to the passion and enthusiasm of the entire INGV community, which wholeheartedly dedicates its life to improving the Earth-Man relationship.
