Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Abstract Diaspora” (from the Greek word for “scattering”) refers to the dispersion of people from their homeland. Diaspora literature are works that are written by authors who live outside their native land. The Indian Diaspora is one of the largest Diasporas in the world. Indians have a long history of emigration to other parts of the world. The Indian indenture system was a system of indentured servitude. About two million Indians were transported to labour in European colonies, as a substitute for slave labour. The system expanded after abolition of the Slavery in the early ninteenth century, British Empire in 1833, in the French colonies in 1848, and in the Dutch Empire in 1863. Indian indentureship lasted till the 1920s. This resulted in the development of a large Indian diaspora in the Caribbean, Natal, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Myanmar, to Fiji, as well as the growth of Indo-Caribbean, Indo-African, Indo-Fijian, Indo-Malaysian, and Indo-Singaporean populations. The term “girmitya" is a malapropism of an English word “agreement, referring to the Agreement of the British Government with the Indian. Indo-Caribbeans or Indian-Caribbeans, are people of Indian descent who live in the Caribbean. They are mostly descendants of the original Jahaji Indian indentured workers. Indo-Caribbeans have migrated to the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Capildeo family is an Indo-Trinidadian family, 2001 Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul and mathematician and politician Rudranath Capildeo are most notable members of this family. Pundit Capildeo, travelled to Trinidad as an indentured labourer in 1894 from his village in Uttar Pradesh.
