Canada Water, Plot B, Rotherhithe, London SE16, Archaeological and geoarchaeological watching brief report
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Within the Plot B area a total of nine boreholes and nine window samples were undertaken during this investigation. The boreholes were drilled using cable percussion and rotary rigs, and the window samples with a terrier rig. All boreholes and window samples were monitored by the geoarchaeologist who made a record of the deposit sequence. Following the fieldwork, the information from the watching brief was supplemented with additional data comprising data from other MOLA investigations, within the site and the wider area. The resulting deposit model has been used to analyse the landscape position and geological setting of the site and the sequence and distribution of deposits within the site to assess their archaeological and geoarchaeological potential. Within the Plot B area a total of nine boreholes and nine window samples were undertaken during this investigation. Of the eighteen interventions, eight boreholes successfully penetrated into the underlying floodplain (Shepperton) gravel strata and geological bedrock. The elevation of the archaeologically significant gravels (equivalent to the early Holocene surface) ranges consistently from -3.19m OD to -2.08m OD. The average surface elevation was -2.43m OD. The early Holocene surface indicates the gravels slope gently toward the Thames south eastward across the site in general from approximately -2m OD in the north to -2.5m OD in the south. Twelve of the interventions encountered Holocene sediments including those that reached the Shepperton Gravel. The surface elevation of the alluvium ranges from 4.01m OD to -1.18m OD and is relatively consistent in terms of degrees of disturbance or truncation of the deposits. The average surface elevation was 2.65m OD, and the average thickness was 4.94m. Across the bulk of the site, the alluvial deposits consisted of soft to firm grey organic clays often sandwiching peat layers, and are indicative of a backwater, marshland environment and broadly equates to all or part of Stages 3 to 6 of Bates and Whittaker's (2004) modelling of the Lower Thames. The Holocene deposits are considered to have high potential for the preservation of palaeoenvironmental indicators. Capping the entire sequence is an average 3.27m of made ground, judged to be up to 6.5m thick in isolated locations. No evidence of pre 19th and 20th century archaeological activity was logged in any intervention onsite.

Le mode candidate est l'union des têtes enseignantes seuillées; le consensus est leur intersection. Ces sorties portent le statut machine_predicted_unvalidated et ne sont ni des étiquettes humaines ni des étiquettes directes de modèles de pointe.
