Bureau of Labor Statistics (2015). Import/Export Price Indexes: Locality of Origin | Country: USA | Series: Canada - Nonmanufactured articles, 12/1990-12/2014. Data-Planet™ Statistical Ready Reference by Conquest Systems, Inc. [Data-file]. Dataset-ID: 002-033-001. Dataset: Presents an index of prices based on where goods are imported from into the United States. Because the US dollar fluctuates against foreign currencies and the types of products being traded differ across localities, price indexes across localities exhibit different trends that could not otherwise be observed from the world goods price indexes. The International Price Program (IPP) of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) produces Import/Export Price Indexes (MXP), which measure the change over time in the prices of goods or services purchased from abroad by US residents (imports) or sold to foreign buyers by US residents (exports). The Import/Export Price Indexes, along with the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index, form the basis of three major BLS programs measuring the change in the prices of goods and services in the US economy. Each of the three has been designated as a Principal Federal Economic Indicator. Published series are based on the following classification structures: Bureau of Economic Analysis End Use, North American Industry Classification System, and the Harmonized System. Product groups covered account for nearly 100 percent of US commodity imports and exports, by value. Works of art and selected special miscellaneous exports are excluded. Services industries covered are air freight and air passenger fares. Imports are reported by locality of origin. Data on US exporters is derived from shippers export declarations, and data on US importers is derived from consumption entry documents. US import and export trade values are used as weights to aggregate index values. IPP collects prices as close as possible to the first day of each reference month. It is important to recognize that, although import and export transaction prices are used to calculate the Import/Export Price Indexes, the IPP does not publish price information. For this reason, the Import/Export Price Indexes cannot be used to measure differences in price levels among different products and services or among different localities of origin. A higher index number for locality A (or product X) does not necessarily mean that prices are higher than for locality B (or product Y) with a lower index number. It only means that prices have risen faster for locality A (or product X) since the reference period. Category: Prices, Consumption, and Cost of Living, International Relations and Trade Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States Department of Labor is the principal fact-finding agency for the federal government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. The BLS is an independent national statistical agency that collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates essential statistical data to the American public, the US Congress, other federal agencies, state and local governments, business, and labor. The BLS also serves as a statistical resource to the Department of Labor. http://www.bls.gov/ Subject: Imports, Price Indexes, International Trade
