In previous years, the coral aquaculture activities of the group Aquanov were focused on the reproduction and growth of hard corals (Scleractlniaires). In 2016, Aquanov started executing activities for the farming and growth of soft corals (corals that do not form coral rock), as it is very easy" to maintain in captivity, less demanding in terms of water quality and has an interesting demand in Canada.The species chosen for this research is the Sarcophytum sp, a coral in the shape of a fungus that presents large polyps (of approximately 3 mm).The purpose of this research was to evaluate the regenerative capacity (to form new colonies) from different parts of the body of coral Sarcophytum sp. The evaluated body parts were the edge of the disc, the center of the disc, and the core. The following were the indicators evaluated in the study: 1.Fixation time of the new rock; 2. Polyps' expansion; 3. Mortality. The experiment stage lasted 6 months.The results were the following: Fixation: On the day 15, the fixation of the fragments of the edge of the disc was of 67%; the fragments of the center of the disc, 50%; .and those of the core, 17%. On the day 60, the fixation of the fragments on the edge of the disc reached 100%, those in the center of the disc, 83%, and on the core 50%. Extension of the polyps: The maximum polyps' extension for the fragments on the edge of the disc was on day 60, with 100%; for those on the center of the disc, on day 120, with 83% and; lastly, on day 150, with 50% for those on the core.Mortality: For the fragments on the edge of the disc, the mortality was of 0%; for those on the center of the disc, 17%; and for those on the core, 50% during the 180 days of the experiment.In conclusion, the best part of the body to carry out the reproduction by fragmentation is the edge of the disc with 100% survival; a fixation of 100% on the day 30 and 100% expansion of polyps on the day 60.With these new techniques, the group Aquanov will be able to introduce a new species Sarcophytum sp in its coral aquaculture activities.
