Notice bibliographique
Résumé
In the pursuit of sustainable development, the intersection of law, sanitation, and sustainability plays a pivotal role in promoting public health and improving quality of life. This dissertation, titled "Direito, Saneamento e Sustentabilidade," delves into a comparative analysis between municipalities in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and the Province of Ontario, Canada, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 and 11. The relevance of sanitation practices in shaping communities is undeniable, and this research endeavors to go beyond academic conventions. Through high-quality scholarship, we explore the reciprocal relationship between academia and the communities of Caçador, Videira, Concórdia, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, North Bay, Chatham-Kent, Woodstock, and Kenora. Engaging with stakeholders, our research reflects their influence on the journey, ensuring a mutual exchange of knowledge. At the heart of our research lies a commitment to identifying and addressing the pressing needs of the communities involved. By closely examining access to household sanitation, specifically potable water and sewage disposal, our work strives to provide insights that resonate with the lived experiences of individuals in both Brazilian and Canadian municipalities. This dissertation breaks free from the confines of academia, aiming to democratize knowledge by making it accessible and understandable to diverse audiences. In our quest for sustainability, we extend our findings beyond scholarly circles, ensuring that the implications of our research reach those directly impacted by sanitation practices. Our commitment to engaged scholarship is evident in the interdisciplinary collaboration that shapes this research. By transcending the boundaries between academic and non-academic communities, we seek to foster a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities inherent in sanitation systems. Knowledge, to be impactful, must flow bidirectionally. Our research showcases a multidirectional flow of insights between researchers and knowledge users. Tangible instances of the uptake of research knowledge are highlighted, emphasizing how our findings have been applied to bring about positive changes in actions, practices, and policies. As we conclude this dissertation, the journey transcends the realm of academia. It beckons a call for action, urging policymakers, practitioners, and communities to join hands in the pursuit of sustainable sanitation practices. The perpetuation of concessions in the sanitation sector emerges as a strategic avenue for accelerating progress, ensuring access to essential services, and advancing the cause of sustainable development. In embracing the principles of engaged scholarship, this research contributes not only to academic discourse but also to the tangible improvement of lives, echoing the spirit of reciprocity, collaboration, and sustainable change.
