Ichthyoplankton community structure in the Northwest Gulf of St-Lawrence (Canada): Past and Present

No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Biodiversity can play an important role in the stability and resilience of an ecosystem when facing environmental changes or anthropogenic impacts. In addition to the fishery-induced collapse of cod and redfish, the last two decades have been characterized by a cooling of water masses in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Historically the northwest of the Gulf was known to have a high fish egg and larval productivity due to hydrodynamic features. To assess changes in the ichthyoplankton community, we compared data from samplings carried out in spring in this region from 1985 to 1987 with data from spring 2005 to 2007. Significant differences in the ichthyoplankton assemblages between the two time periods were highlighted by multivariate analyses as well as differences in the assemblages between sampling times (May versus June). The results indicate that the total fish egg and larval abundance were lower in the 2000’s period than during the mid 1980’s. Eggs from the CHW (that includes cod) category that were the most abundant in the mid 1980’s are now replaced by H4B eggs. Although Ammodytes spp. remains one of the most frequent species, its abundance decreased and other species became more abundant (i.e., species from the Stichaeidae), while Sebastes spp. is no longer one of the top four dominant species. Others species also appeared recently in the 2000’s assemblages (i.e., Reinhardtius hippoglossoides). Our study provides much needed new information of current biodiversity and productivity of the fish community in the northwest Gulf of St. Lawrence and insights of its changes as influenced by environmental fluctuations
