(En.) arrecta species group by a pair of narrow processes on the male hind tibia, hind tibia not broadened apically (Figs 17–19), scutum without three brownish vittae and male cercus broad basally with short upright posterior lobe. Description. Wing length 4.7–5.4 mm. Male. Head dark in ground-colour, with greyish pruinescence. Eyes closely approximated, separated by width of 2–3 ommatidia, upper ommatidia not enlarged. Frons forming small triangular plate above antennae and smaller triangular plate below ocellar triangle; without short setulae along inner margin of eye. Face without setae; slightly parallel-sided towards mouthparts, with oral margin dark and shiny. Ocellar triangle elevated, with thin greyish pruinescence, with pair of parallel ocellar setae and several pairs of short setulae. Occiput bearing single row of setae, slightly shorter than ocellar setae, longer and finer ventrally; postocular setae shorter than occipital row, stronger and longer dorsally; postocellar region with several short setae. Postpedicel and stylus dark brown, pedicel and scape slightly paler; scape 2× longer than pedicel, with short, black setae; pedicel with ring of apical setae; postpedicel long and tapered, more than 4× longer than basal width; stylus 1.5× longer than basal width of postpedicel. Palpus pale, yellowish brown, with dark setulae. Proboscis reddish brown, length less than 2× head height; labellum with short, dark setae. Thorax dark brown in ground-colour, densely grey pruinescent (Fig. 21), with thin whitish vittae along dc rows and either side of acr row when viewed at certain angles; apex of postpronotal lobe yellowish brown. Proepisternum with several pairs of short brown setae on lower section; upper proepisternum in front of spiracle without setae. Prosternum bare. Antepronotum with row of short, brownish setae. Postpronotum with 1 long seta and several short, dark setae. Scutum with short, fine uniserial acr; dc slightly longer, stronger than acr, increasing in length posteriorly; 2 posterior npl, with 1 shorter anterior npl; 1 presut spal; 1 psut spal; 1 pal. Scutellum with 1 pair of long, widely separated apical sctl, with 1 pair of outer marginal setae; disc bare. Laterotergite with narrow patch of strong, dark setae. Anterior and posterior spiracles yellowish brown. Legs slender, yellowish brown to reddish brown, apex of tibiae and tarsi darker; fore coxa with thin greyish pruinescence. Coxae with thin dark setae. Hind trochanter with numerous setulae. Fore femur sparely clothed in short, brownish setae. Fore tibia similarly sparsely setose with 1 short anterodorsal seta near mid-length; several weakly differentiated dorsal and ventral preapical setae. Fore tarsomere 1 slender, not swollen; all tarsomeres with biserial row of spine-like ventral setae; tarsomeres 1–4 with apicolateral pair of spine-like setae, longer than width of segment. Mid femur with dense whitish ventral pile; anteroventral and posteroventral row of fine setae, shorter than width of segment. Mid tibia with 2–3 pairs of short anterodorsal and posterodorsal setae and several preapical setae. Mid tarsus similar to fore tarsus. Hind femur slightly expanded preapically, with short, knob-like anteroventral process, shorter than half width of femur, with tuft of black setae directed posteriorly; anteroventral process flanked by broader inner lobe with ring of short apical setae; short, conical lobe posterior to inner lobe bearing hook-like seta; shorter, pointed ventral lobe posterior to hooked-tipped lobe; without posteroventral preapical lobe; apex with preapical row of 5–6 flattened, black, short blunt posterior setae; preapical anterior seta strong, shorter than width of femur (Figs 17–20). Hind tibia with narrow, arched anteroventral digitiform process on basal quarter, slightly proximal to process of femur (when legs folded), with crown of black setae and several lateral setae; posteroventrally with digitiform process with broad basal half and strongly attenuated and tapered, arched apical half, with pair of long subapical lateral setae, nearly as long as process; without seta in posteroapical comb; apical half of tibia with long anterodorsal and posterodorsal setae, nearly twice width of tibia (Figs 18, 19). Hind tarsus with tarsomere 1 slightly inflated, half width of tibia with several strong anterodorsal and posterodorsal setae. Wing infuscate with dark veins, base of wing and calypters yellowish brown; all veins complete (except Sc), well sclerotized, except CuA+CuP rather weak. Basal costal seta absent. R 5 and M 1 divergent near wing margin; R 5 ending at or slightly beyond wing tip; radial fork acute. Halter pale, yellowish brown. Abdomen shiny, without pruinescence, reddish brown with pale, golden setae, especially longer laterally. Pregenital segments mostly unmodified; tergite 6 with posteroventral corner slightly prolonged, rounded; sclerites of segment 8 narrowly separated. Terminalia (Figs 22, 26, 27): dark reddish brown with hypandrium shiny and phallus orange brown. Cerci separated; erect, projecting dorsally with crown of dense, black setae; posterior margin with several setose projections; base broad, expanded dorsally into short, rounded lobe; base prolonged posteriorly into strong, arched, slightly hooked lobe. Subepandrial process strongly hooked, similar to hooked cercal lobe. Epandrial lamella subtriangular, longer than high; broadly fused with cercus anteriorly; posterior margin without knob-like projection; setae similar to cercal setae. Hypandrium short, truncate, with shallow notch laterally and curved posterior margin; several long setae basally. Phallus with expanded base, with posterior and lateral margins with minute roughened region; strongly attenuated beyond base, strongly arched apically with cylindrical, papilla-like projections (Fig. 27); apex emerging well beyond epandrium; ejaculatory apodeme more than half-length of epandrium, T-shaped, with lateral apodemes medially. Female. Similar to male, except as follows: frons slightly broader than width of anterior ocellus; hindleg without modified setae and processes. Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence (Fig. 40). Empis (En.) diokra sp. nov. is known from Colorado, Utah, Idaho and possibly Oregon. Adults have been collected from June to August. Etymology. The species name is derived from Greek for a pair of projections, in reference to the two narrow processes on the hind tibia of this species. Nuptial gift presentation. Form unknown.
