Bembidion nigrivestis Bousquet, sp. nov. (Figs. 1, 3) Etymology. The specific name is the combination of the Latin adjective niger, ­ gra, ­ grum (black) and the Latin noun vestis, ­is, f (clothes, clothing), referring to the blackish color of the species integument. Color: Head black dorsally; pronotum reddish­black to black; elytra black with intervals 1 and lateral margins, in some specimens also base, paler, reddish to brownish­red; antennomeres 1 and 2 yellow, though antennomere 2 slightly darker than 1 in most specimens; antennomere 3 yellow with apical two­thirds to third infuscate; antennomeres 4–11 reddish­brown; palpi brown to brownish­black; femora and tibiae yellow, tarsi slightly darker, yellowish­brown. Microsculpture: Clypeus without distinct meshes; frons with isodiametric to slightly transverse meshes; pronotum without evident meshes though at high magnification spots of poorly impressed meshes are often visible; elytra with striate microsculpture, microlines poorly evident; abdominal sterna iridescent laterally, microlines indistinct. Head: Proportionally wide, with large eyes; antennomeres 3–11 clearly elongate. Prothorax: Pronotum proportionally short; sides rectilinearly convergent up to near posterior angles; posterior angles about right. Elytra: Striae moderately coarsely punctate up to slightly behind middle of elytra. Male genitalia: Median lobe as illustrated (Fig. 3). Apparent body length = 2.5–3.0 mm. Geographical Distribution. This species is known from New Brunswick and Maine west to eastern Minnesota and southeastern Manitoba. Wing Development. This species is wing­dimorphic. Of the 51 specimens investigated for wing status, two specimens had long wings and the other ones short wings. Habitat. Adults of this species were found in New Brunswick in moss and leaf litter along the margin of a small intermittent stream shaded by alders, cedars, and balsam firs and in moist leaves and moss along the margin of vernal snow­melt pools. In New Brunswick adults become active on bare patches on the forest floor early in the season when a significant amount of snow is still on the ground. Bembidion semicinctum often cooccurred with B. nigrivestis. Note. This species belongs to the subgenus Semicampa Netolitzky. It is externally most similar to B. muscicola Hayward and B. praticola Lindroth. Adults of B. nigrivestis differ from those of these two species in having the body distinctly darker dorsally. Specimens of B. muscicola differ also from those of B. nigrivestis in having evident microsculpture meshes on the pronotum while specimens of B. praticola differ also in having transverse microsculpture meshes on the elytra, the body proportionally longer, the head narrower, and the pronotum longer on average (see "Key to Nearctic species of Semicampa " below for measurements). The subgenus Semicampa contains 25 species: 18 are found in the Palaearctic Region (Marggi et al. 2003: 266–267) and seven occur in the Nearctic Region. Adults of Semicampa are small (less than 4 mm in length), without or with faint metallic lustre and possess the following character states: frontal furrows parallel on frons, extended and doubled on clypeus to anterior edge; mentum tooth small, flat; pronotum with laterobasal carina and basal edge truncate laterally; lateral edge of elytron not extended beyond humerus; seven punctate striae distinct on anterior third of elytron; striae, particularly lateral ones, obsolete toward apex; two non foveate discal setae (ed3 and ed5) on interval 3, anterior one free, not attached to stria 3; anterior metasternal apophysis marginate, margination relatively close to edge. Following is a key for the recognition of all but one species of Semicampa found in North America. The species not included, B. rubiginosum LeConte, is known only from the holotype. Based on a superficial study of the specimen, we believe it could be a macropterous adult of B. roosevelti Pic.
