This thesis aims to provide a translation from French to Italian of the literary work Elles se relèvent encore et encore, written by Julie Cunningham and published in 2020 in Canada by Éditions Hannenorak, which contains testimonies from First Nations women. The first chapter presents a study on the correct naming, definition and characterisation of Indigenous populations in Canadian French language and culture, with a particular focus on the First Nations. This is followed by a historical-anthropological examination of the Atikamekw and Innu Nation, a description of Indigenous literatures, and the demo-linguistic situation of these communities. The second chapter discusses key considerations as essential in translating the literary genre of the testimony, together with the translation strategies and tools used to render the work fluently and engagingly for an Italian-speaking audience, while simultaneously incorporating elements of cultural diversity to enrich the Italian-speaking reader’s knowledge. Finally, the third chapter analyses salient aspects of the translation process on morphosyntactic, lexical, pragmatic, and metatextual levels concluding with the rendering of the title. Highlights of this analysis include the translation of the term autochtone from French into Italian, the transcription of foreign elements such as realia, Algonquian terms and anglicisms (often accompanied by the translator’s note), the comparison of morphological and syntactic structures between the original and the translated texts, and the decisions made regarding greetings, expressions of thanks and pragmatèmes, and the final choice for the Italian title.
